The theme for this year’s World PT Day on 8 September is the role of physiotherapy and physical activity in the prevention, management, and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Cardiovascular Disease:

- Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally.
- Each year, cardiovascular disease (CVD) claims over 20.5 million lives - representing over 30% of all global deaths. 85% of these are due to heart attack and stroke.
- Physiotherapists can help to prevent CVD. They:
1. can help identify people at higher risk of heart disease
2. design safe, personalised exercise programs
3. encourage regular physical activity
4. promote early detection and early action
5. spot warning signs
- Physiotherapists can help people manage their CVD, become more active, and reduce the chance of further cardiac events, such as a heart attack.

Stroke:

- 1 in 4 of us will have a stroke in our lifetime, but almost all strokes can be prevented.
- Just 30 minutes of exercise five times a week can reduce your risk of stroke by 25%.
- Physiotherapists play an important role in reducing stroke risk, especially by supporting people to be more physically active and manage long term health conditions.
- Rehabilitation is an important part of recovery after a stroke - it helps people get back to doing everyday activities, improves quality of life, and supports independence.
- Exercise-based physiotherapy has been shown to improve physical function, mobility, balance, and quality of life at all stages of stroke recovery — from hospital care to long term community rehabilitation.

We’ve been learning!

Both our physiotherapists Michala and Joe have recently taken part in continued education to better manage shoulder pain and injuries.

Joe has recently completed a one day course with “The Shoulder Physio” Jared Powell. While Michala, has been working through Jared’s “The Complete Shoulder Course” online.

These courses focus on understanding and diagnosing rotator cuff pathology, shoulder assessment and patient interviewing, and making appropriate treatment decisions, including when surgery and injection may be beneficial.

Continuing professional development helps us keep our knowledge current and continue to provide evidence-informed care to our patients.

When it comes to pain remember!
1. Appropriate exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve symptoms associated with osteoarthritis.
2. Many imaging findings are a normal part of ageing and don't always explain pain.
3. Movement builds stronger, healthier bodies.
4. The goal isn't perfect movement. It's confident movement.

Yesterday Joe completed his first 10km run in Forster for Run Fest, achieving a PB for 5km too! This interest for running started when joining the local Hallidays Point Run Club to get some extra steps in during the week.

The progressive training approach with some strength work definitely helped with preparation for the race, as well as setting appropriate goals to aim for.

Well done Joe!

Congratulations to our amazing physiotherapist Michala on completing the City2Surf! 🎉

What an incredible effort taking on one of Sydney’s most iconic fun runs. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or simply crossing the finish line, completing 14km is a fantastic achievement.

As physios, we love seeing people challenge themselves, stay active, and enjoy the many physical and mental benefits that movement brings.

Congratulations on an awesome run! 👏

Pain in your heel on the first few steps in the morning? You might have plantar heel pain (also known as plantar fasciitis). Michala provides some general advice about managing this condition.

Make sure to have your pain assessed to receive the right treatment for you.
