In my deepest grief, I made a decision.
If I was going to be here without my son, then I was going to live a life worth living. I wanted to do good. I wanted to leave a positive impact on the world.
My plan was to become a midwife to be there for women in their most vulnerable moments, helping them feel supported, cared for, and never alone.
So I started the journey.
I became a Registered Nurse and set my sights on the MidStart program, where nurses can complete on-the-job training to become midwives. That was the goal.
But life had other plans.
When that pathway didn’t work out, I left the hospital and spent several years working in cosmetic nursing. During that time, I heard about something called a doula, and it felt like a lightbulb switched on.
Here was a way for me to support women exactly as my heart had always intended.
It was human-centred, not clinical.
Raw and real.
Built on connection, trust, care, and presence.
So I studied. I became a doula.
And what an incredible journey it has been.
Do I ever regret not becoming a midwife?
Sometimes.
As a doula, you’re constantly looking for your next client because your income depends on it. Midwives don’t face that same challenge.
But when it comes to the work itself, I feel deeply settled.
I love caring for women in this way.
This work is heart work.
Would I ever go back and become a midwife?
I’ll never say never. I don’t know what the future holds.
But right now, I feel exactly where I’m meant to be.
If you’re looking for support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, I’d love to walk this journey with you.
