🌿 Most people who distract an assistance dog have no idea they are doing it. A quick pat. A whistle. Calling out to say hello. It comes from warmth, and it can still put someone at risk.
A dog in harness is working. It may be monitoring its handler for a seizure, tracking a change in blood sugar, or bracing to steady someone who is about to lose their balance. An interruption at the wrong moment has real consequences.
What helps is simple. Do not pat, feed, call or photograph a working dog. Talk to the person rather than the animal. Do not assume the handler wants to explain their disability to a stranger. And if an assistance dog approaches you alone, follow it, because its handler may be in trouble.
None of this requires special knowledge. Most people simply have never been told.
📌 Save this and pass it on to someone who has not seen it.
