Why picking up a pen is one of the best things you can do for your brain
Somewhere along the way, handwriting became a chore. We type everything, dictate messages, and keep our thoughts inside our phones. But your brain still loves a pen.
When you handwrite, your brain activates multiple systems at the same time:
* Motor coordination — your fingers, hand and arm work together to create every letter.
* Memory encoding — writing helps your brain process and store information.
* Language processing — you’re choosing words, spelling and creating meaning.
* Visual awareness — your brain judges spacing, direction and the position of every word on the page.
This is why we shouldn’t minimise handwriting. It isn’t just writing—it’s a full brain-and-body workout.
The research is fascinating
A large Australian study followed more than 10,000 adults over the age of 70 for a decade. It found that people who regularly took part in adult literacy activities—especially writing letters and journaling—had a significantly lower risk of developing dementia compared with those who rarely did these activities.
Another long-term study found that people who kept personal journals throughout their lives had more than a 50% lower risk of dementia. The researchers believe that regularly expressing thoughts through writing helps build what we call cognitive reserve—the brain’s ability to cope with ageing and disease.
Bring back the old art of pen palling
Picking up the old art of pen palling or simply journaling your day can do more than preserve memories. It can engage your brain’s reward system, giving you a genuine sense of pleasure, connection and achievement. Writing about your day, your gratitude, or even sending a handwritten letter gives your brain something screens simply don’t replace.
So here’s a simple challenge:
Spend just 10 minutes a day with a pen.
Write about your day. Write a letter. Make tomorrow’s to-do list. It doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be handwritten.
Because sometimes the smallest daily habit becomes one of the greatest investments you can make in your future brain.
