Managing Seasonal Affective Disorder isn’t about forcing yourself to be “on” all the time. It’s about supporting yourself in small, steady ways.

You don’t have to fix everything at once. Just meet yourself where you are and take it one day at a time.

If you’re considering support, speaking with a psychologist is one option. To learn more, visit https://www.onlinepsychologist.com.au/.

You may have heard of arachnophobia or claustrophobia, but phobias can show up in many different ways. Some fears don’t have punchlines, trends, or easy explanations - they’re just real.

Whether it’s a fear of small holes, balloons, beards, or things others barely notice, less common phobias can still bring intense anxiety, panic, and overwhelm, just like more widely known fears. Our brains don’t measure validity by popularity.

If something feels scary to you, that experience deserves understanding, not judgment. Mental health isn’t a competition for whose fear is “normal enough.”

Listen without mocking. Learn without judging. And remember, all phobias are valid experiences.

Having trouble getting a good sleep? Wondering if sleep duration affects sleep quality?

When speaking with Body+Soul magazine, Online Psychologist Australia sleep technologist Dr Michelle Olaithe recommends going to bed and waking at roughly the same time each day – yes, even on weekends.

“This routine helps your body know when to release melatonin at night and cortisol in the morning.”

Worried your eight hours may not be enough?

Navigating tricky family conversations can be challenging, especially when tensions or strong opinions show up.

Here are psychologist-recommended ways to turn down the temperature:

• Check in with yourself – notice what’s triggering you
• Set clear boundaries – redirect or skip tense topics
• Use early intervention – a light joke or pause can prevent escalation
• Take breaks when needed – step away to reset and calm down
• Plan your exit – leaving early is okay to protect your wellbeing

Interactions with family members don’t need to be perfect, just manageable.

Social media can perpetuate misleading portrayals of what constitutes as a ‘perfect’ relationship, which may lead to expectations that are difficult to meet.

As our Clinical Psychologist Dr Michelle Olaithe explained to Weekend Today, social media portrayals of relationships can be carefully curated, and even “healthy” relationships require effort and ongoing communication.

Instead, Dr Olaithe highlights how attachment theory can tell us much more about how certain behaviours are triggered depending on your attachment style.

Relationship therapy can make a significant difference in your life and relationships. If this is something you’re struggling with, professional support is available at: https://www.onlinepsychologist.com.au/online-relationship-counselling

Family tension is common, and manageable.

Here are four psychologist-recommended strategies:

1. Set clear boundaries
Know what topics and interactions you’re comfortable with before you arrive

2. Take a regulation break
Step outside, breathe, or take a short walk to calm your nervous system

3. Model the behaviour you hope to receive
Lead with compassion and curiosity to help shift the tone

4. Practise self-compassion
If you react, you’re human. Be gentle with yourself and reset

Why can't I just get over it!?

Anxiety is the most common problem affecting Australians’ mental health – it’s the equivalent of the common cold for the mind but it does much more damage.

Anxiety isn’t something one can simply “get over”. Overcoming your anxiety will be informed by your natural response to anxiety; either avoidance or using a “crutch”, or safety behaviour, to cope.

Online counselling with our team of professionals helps people to work out effective plans for overcoming their anxiety. This can involve identifying the core underlying beliefs that are a part of the anxiety, where the anxiety comes from, and, of course, how to start taking small practical steps to overcome the anxiety.

You or someone you know has likely experienced anxiety, our body’s natural response to stress. Unfortunately, merely being aware of anxiety does not negate the difficulty in dealing with it. When a loved one is suffering from anxiety, it can be difficult to know how to help them best.

To provide the right support for our loved ones, it’s important to be aware of how anxiety develops, what the identifying triggers are, and how to cater our response to the needs of our partners.

If you are experiencing anxiety and need support, contact us online to make an appointment.
