🤯 3.5 weeks. 🤯

When we stop chasing symptoms and start treating the function, incredible things can happen.

This young patient was referred with a tongue thrust swallow and open bite. By retraining tongue posture, lip seal and swallowing, we’re already seeing the bite begin to come together.

Small daily habits. Big functional changes.

⚠️ 5 Things I REFUSE to Do ❌
(as a Registered Dental Hygienist, Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist & a mum)

Some of these might surprise you… but after years of treating children and adults with airway issues, poor sleep, jaw pain and mouth breathing, these are non-negotiables for me.

1. ❌ I will NEVER accept mouth breathing as “normal.”
If you’re breathing through your mouth while awake or asleep, your body is working harder than it needs to. Your nose exists for a reason—it filters, warms, humidifies and helps protect the air you breathe.

2. ❌ I will NEVER ignore snoring.
No one shouldn’t snore. Adults shouldn’t dismiss it. Snoring can be a sign that your airway is narrowing while you sleep, and it’s worth investigating.

3. ❌ I will NEVER let a blocked nose become my “normal.”
If your nose is blocked every day, find out why. Allergies, enlarged adenoids, inflammation, a deviated septum or chronic congestion can all affect breathing, sleep and quality of life.

4. ❌ I will NEVER tell someone crooked teeth are ‘just genetics.’
Genetics play a role, but so do breathing, tongue posture, swallowing habits and jaw development. We need to look at the whole picture—not just the teeth.

5. ❌ I will NEVER ignore what my tongue is doing.
Your tongue should rest on the roof of your mouth, your lips should be together, and breathing should happen through your nose. It sounds simple, but these habits influence facial growth, swallowing, jaw function and breathing.

💥 Here’s the truth…

We spend thousands straightening teeth.

Very few people ask why they became crooked in the first place.

The airway matters.
The tongue matters.
Breathing matters.

And if we don’t address the cause, we’re often just treating the symptom.

✨ Sometimes the smallest release can create the biggest change.

This adult patient had lived with:

• Two rounds of orthodontic treatment
• Premolar extractions
• Jaw and neck tension
• Whole-body postural compensation
• Facial asymmetry
• A dysfunctional swallow pattern
• Low tongue posture

After careful assessment, preparation with myofunctional therapy, bodywork, and a tongue-tie release, their tongue mobility has transformed.

This result wasn’t achieved by surgery alone.

✅ Preparation
✅ Consistent exercises
✅ Daily practice
✅ Commitment

A tongue-tie release is not a quick fix. The best outcomes come when it’s combined with the right therapy, the right clinician, and a patient who puts in the work.

Every patient is different, and treatment should always be based on function—not simply because a tongue tie is present.

The transformation speaks for itself ✨

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mums, grandmothers, carers and mother figures I have the privilege of working with ❤️

Behind every appointment, every exercise practised at home, every lifestyle change, every late night, every school pick-up, every emotional moment, and every little win… is a parent showing up again and again for their child.

I see the effort you put in.
I see the research, the questions, the worry, the advocacy, the patience and the love.

Thank you for trusting me to be part of your family’s journey and allowing me to support your children and their health. It is never lost on me how much dedication goes into helping a child thrive, and so much of that comes from you.

To the mums doing all the things — often quietly, behind the scenes — you are doing an amazing job.

Wishing you a day where you feel appreciated, celebrated and deeply loved. 🌸✨

So my son has a dust mite allergy. And honestly, I was surprised. Not because it’s uncommon (it’s actually very common), but because he doesn’t have the “typical allergy kid” symptoms.

No constant sneezing.
No obvious congestion.
No itchy, watery eyes.
No chronic cough.

But this is what I see all the time in clinic — airway inflammation isn’t always loud or obvious.

Sometimes it shows up as:
• Slightly enlarged turbinates
• Mild adenoid hypertrophy
• Subtle nasal resistance
• Mouth breathing tendencies
• Restless or disturbed sleep
• Dry mouth on waking
• Snoring
• Dark circles
• Daytime fatigue, irritability, or poor focus

It can be chronic low-grade airway inflammation quietly flying under the radar.

And when you zoom out, this can start to influence:
• Breathing patterns (more mouth breathing vs nasal breathing)
• Sleep quality and how deeply they rest
• Behaviour, focus, and regulation
• Oral function
• How the face grows over time

Not in an obvious overnight way — but slowly, subtly, over years.

So what do we actually do about it?

We don’t aim for perfection. We just reduce the overall allergen load, especially overnight.

Some simple changes can make a huge difference:
✔️ Wash bedding weekly in 60°C water
✔️ Use full zippered mattress, pillow, and doona protectors
✔️ Keep bedroom humidity around 40–50%
✔️ Open the room daily for airflow
✔️ Vacuum regularly with a HEPA filter if possible
✔️ Air filter in bedroom
✔️ Minimise dust reservoirs:
– Soft toys
– Carpets
– Heavy fabric curtains
– Fabric bedheads
– Excess cushions and blankets

Because kids spend 8–12 hours breathing in their bedrooms every single night.

It’s not about creating a sterile home. It’s about creating an environment that supports easy nasal breathing and quality sleep.
