⚠️ 5 Things I REFUSE to Do ❌
(as a Registered Dental Hygienist, Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist & a mum)
Some of these might surprise you… but after years of treating children and adults with airway issues, poor sleep, jaw pain and mouth breathing, these are non-negotiables for me.
1. ❌ I will NEVER accept mouth breathing as “normal.”
If you’re breathing through your mouth while awake or asleep, your body is working harder than it needs to. Your nose exists for a reason—it filters, warms, humidifies and helps protect the air you breathe.
2. ❌ I will NEVER ignore snoring.
No one shouldn’t snore. Adults shouldn’t dismiss it. Snoring can be a sign that your airway is narrowing while you sleep, and it’s worth investigating.
3. ❌ I will NEVER let a blocked nose become my “normal.”
If your nose is blocked every day, find out why. Allergies, enlarged adenoids, inflammation, a deviated septum or chronic congestion can all affect breathing, sleep and quality of life.
4. ❌ I will NEVER tell someone crooked teeth are ‘just genetics.’
Genetics play a role, but so do breathing, tongue posture, swallowing habits and jaw development. We need to look at the whole picture—not just the teeth.
5. ❌ I will NEVER ignore what my tongue is doing.
Your tongue should rest on the roof of your mouth, your lips should be together, and breathing should happen through your nose. It sounds simple, but these habits influence facial growth, swallowing, jaw function and breathing.
💥 Here’s the truth…
We spend thousands straightening teeth.
Very few people ask why they became crooked in the first place.
The airway matters.
The tongue matters.
Breathing matters.
And if we don’t address the cause, we’re often just treating the symptom.
