What is Ataxia?

Ataxia is a neurological condition that affects coordination, balance, and muscle control. It occurs when the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for coordinating movement, is damaged or affected by disease.

People living with ataxia may experience:
• Difficulty walking or maintaining balance
• Poor hand coordination and fine motor skills
• Slurred or slow speech
• Vision and eye coordination difficulties
• Difficulty swallowing
• Challenges performing everyday tasks

Ataxia is not a single disease, it is a symptom of an underlying neurological condition. It can be acquired, inherited, or sporadic, and treatment depends on identifying its underlying cause.

While there is currently no cure for many forms of ataxia, early diagnosis, rehabilitation, and ongoing support can help people maintain their independence and improve their quality of life. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, assistive technology, and personalised supports all play an important role.

How Supported Independent Living (SIL) Can Help

For individuals whose ataxia significantly impacts their daily living, Supported Independent Living (SIL) can provide the assistance needed to live safely and as independently as possible. Depending on individual needs, SIL may include:

• Support with daily household tasks and personal care
• Assistance with meal preparation and nutrition
• Support to access the community, appointments, education, and social activities
• Encouragement to develop daily living skills and build confidence
• Assistance with medication routines and health management
• 24/7 support in a shared or individual living arrangement, where appropriate

At Arete Care, our participant-focused SIL services are tailored to each individual's goals and support needs, helping people with ataxia live more independently and participate actively in their community.

Neurological conditions require specialised support. Understanding them is the first step toward inclusion.

If you or someone you know is living with ataxia, Arete Care is here to help. Contact us today to learn how our SIL services can support greater independence.

💜 Epilepsy Awareness 💜

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the brain and impacts millions of people worldwide. It can cause recurring seizures, which may vary from person to person and involve changes in movement, awareness, behaviour, or sensations. While epilepsy can present unique challenges, many people living with the condition lead active, independent, and fulfilling lives with the right support.

Epilepsy is often an invisible disability, meaning the challenges individuals face may not always be seen by others. Beyond seizures, some people may experience fatigue, memory difficulties, anxiety, or concerns about their safety and independence. This is why understanding, patience, and community support can make a meaningful difference in their daily lives.

At Arete Care, we support individuals living with epilepsy through our Supported Independent Living (SIL) and disability support services. We provide person-centred support that promotes safety, independence, dignity, and meaningful participation in everyday life.

Awareness starts with understanding. Together, we can create a community where people living with epilepsy feel valued, respected, and supported.

Every small step toward awareness can make a meaningful difference. 💜

Managing a complex condition like Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) requires a highly specialised, clinical approach. Because this neurological disorder uniquely impacts language centers while leaving cognitive intellect intact, support must be precisely tailored.

Primary Progressive Aphasia is a rare form of dementia caused by degeneration in the areas of the brain that control speech and language. Unlike other neurological conditions that primarily impact memory first, PPA gradually impairs a person's ability to speak, write, read, and understand spoken words, while their general awareness and intellect remain largely unaffected in the early stages.

At Arete Care, we support SIL participants living with PPA by working closely with speech pathologists, families, and allied health teams to create environments where communication and connection remain central, regardless of how language abilities shift over time.

Arete Care was at the Wyndham Disability Connection Expo in Hoppers Crossing last Saturday, and it was an absolute blast!

There is nothing better than swapping ideas, strengthening those community ties, and figuring out how everyone can work together to do better for the people being supported. Plus, it was amazing meeting so many incredible people who are genuinely passionate about the work they do.

The excitement is real when it comes to keeping these conversations going and building an even stronger, more connected NDIS community.

Arete Care was proud to attend the Frankston Community Disability Expo lastweek, hosted by Disability Events Community. 🤍

Events like these bring the whole sector into one room — participants, families, plan managers, providers, and allied health companies — all with a shared focus on inclusion, independence, and better outcomes for the disability community.

It was a privilege to be part of the day and to connect with so many people and organisations doing meaningful work across the sector.

Thank you to Disability Events Community for hosting, and to everyone we met. We look forward to continuing these conversations at future events.

Not all communication challenges are visible.

Severe language impairment is so much more than just difficulty speaking. It deeply affects how a person understands information, processes conversations, expresses emotions, and connects with the world around them. For many individuals living with Autism, Acquired Brain Injury, intellectual disability, or complex neurological conditions, this challenge sits alongside other intensive support needs, and it is often misunderstood.

What may appear as withdrawal, frustration, delayed responses, or "challenging behaviors" is frequently just someone struggling to process or communicate language effectively. That distinction matters. When it's missed, people get excluded from decisions, relationships, and meaningful participation in their own lives.

At Arete Care, communication support goes far beyond helping someone "talk." It’s about creating environments where participants feel completely safe to express themselves in the way that works best for them. This means building in extra processing time, using visual supports, implementing AAC tools, maintaining predictable spaces, and working in close collaboration with speech pathologists and families.

Ultimately, the most important shift we can make in disability support is changing the question:

From: "How do we get the person to communicate our way?"
To: "How do we adapt so the person can communicate successfully?"

Because communication isn't just about speech. It’s about dignity, autonomy, inclusion, and the human right to be truly understood.
