Supporting a family member through illness is something many of us never expect to become experts in. Often questions arise before we know where to turn.

Banksia Palliative Care offers Community Conversations – free, engaging presentations for community groups, clubs and organisations that explore topics such as supporting ageing parents, planning ahead, caring at home, understanding palliative care, and knowing what support is available.

Banksia is at it again! After a hugely successful Advance Care Planning Workshop in March, we're running another with partners Nillumbik Shire Council and Northern Health Advance Care Planning.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn all there is to know about Advance Care Planning (ACP). This is not just people who are ill. ACP is for everyone.

Let's be honest, most of us would rather not think about serious illness, dying, or end-of-life care. But just as we prepare for the beginning of life, we can also bring care and attention to its final chapter.

Banksia Palliative Care will discuss what palliative care really is, who it helps and why it matters. At its heart, palliative care is about people, relationships, comfort and making the most of every day. No prior knowledge is needed to attend – just an openness to learn about a service that may one day support you, someone you love or someone in your community.

Calling all clinical and allied health professionals working in palliative care! This professional development is for you! ✨

This is a full day seminar that explores the psychological dimensions of end-of-life care equipping participants with the skills to identify, assess and respond to the emotional and complex mental health needs of patients and their carers.

Recognizing the emotional demands of working in palliative care, the workshop will also address clinician wellbeing, offering strategies for self-care and sustainable professional practice.

Nurses Wendy and Dianne (a Banksia volunteer) have been getting out and about for Dying to Know Day.

Yesterday you would have found them at Northern Health Hospital foyer telling everyone about palliative care and that we are a service which is available to the community, for free, in the home, for anyone living in the Nillumbik, Banyule and Whittlesea communities. It was super busy and a few more people know about us now.

What a great event!

200 people assembled at Eltham Reception Centre last Thursday night for a frank discussion about all things end-of-life to celebrate Dying to Know Day.

Banksia collaborated with Nillumbik Council and Northern Health to bring this event today, and it was a success!

Are you dying to know more about palliative care, end-of-life choices and death?

Today is Dying to Know Day, an annual campaign that encourages breaking down taboos around death, grief, and end-of-life planning by encouraging people to have open conversations about their final wishes.

At Banksia we're passionate about having meaningful conversations about what we do and how we support people in our community who are living with a life-limiting illness. If you're a part of a community group that is curious to know more, we'd be happy to send our experts out to speak to you. We want to share our knowledge to help make these conversations happen and support community with end-of-life.

Meet Bev, one of Banksia’s volunteers.

Bev ended up volunteering at Banksia when she filled in for a friend for a couple of weeks while they went on holiday. That was 21 years ago and Bev is still coming into Banksia each week. “I’ve been fortunate in life so feel the need to give back.”

Bev has done all kinds of administrative work around the office for Banksia. She’s been on the switchboard; she keeps nurses’ supplies up to date; and she calls hospitals to check who’s still on the books. She didn’t know anything about palliative care when she started but now knows lots.

“People don’t know about the support they and their partner can get in the home when there’s illness. When Banksia came in to look after my husband Les last year it was such a relief to know that they’re there to answer questions and show me what to do. They were able to tell me about the progression of illness and what to expect. It was a comfort to know they were available.”

Banksia is so grateful for Bev’s voluntary service to our organization. We count our blessings for her generosity and commitment to community service. Thank you Bev - you are a legend! 💙

For those of you who have lost a loved one, whilst being supported by Banksia, this invitation is for you: A social group which meets on the first Friday of each month.

Next Friday 7 August, we will gather at Bundoora Homestead Arts Centre café. We meet to connect people with others who share the lived experience of having cared for a loved one who has died. It’s an opportunity for a cuppa and informal conversation about life and loss.

We meet at the café . Those who are interested can take a walk together through the gardens at the end of the meetup.
