Setting boundaries in healthcare isn’t about refusing care- it’s about how care is delivered.
There is strong ethical and clinical grounding for this:
• Patient autonomy includes the right to accept or decline aspects of care when informed (Krupa, 2024).
• Trauma-informed care emphasises safety, choice, and avoiding re-traumatisation in clinical interactions (Krupka, 2024).
• Shared decision-making improves engagement and health outcomes (Trout et al., 2023).
At the same time, clinicians must balance this with beneficence and non-maleficence; ensuring care remains safe and appropriate.
This is why conversations matter.
