What if the most important inheritance isn't something we receive, but something we choose?

This month, Dr May Chi explores the fascinating idea of symbolic inheritance — the beliefs, stories, habits, values and behaviours that are passed from one generation to the next.

While we can't choose our genetics, we can choose what we carry forward and what we leave behind. Every day, through our actions and decisions, we shape the legacy we pass on to others.

A thought-provoking read about human behaviour, culture and the power of conscious choice.

I've been marveling at these psychoeducation resources that Heitor has created (downloadable for free with none of the usual annoying sign-ins):

We originally created these handouts to support our own clients with clear, practical and evidence-informed information. We now decided to share them more widely, hoping they may also benefit the community and other mental health professionals supporting their clients.

The only downside to chairing a world conference panel of amazing people is that this is the exact topic I would have loved to take a bajillion notes in. Beyond inspired by the panalists and attendees, and, a key message that resonates: Our capacity to be moved, to be impacted, to show up in the face of difficult emotions in order to do what matters collaboratively, is what our world needs of us.

"Autistic people don't habituate. They learn to switch off from sensation. It takes up mental space for that entire day. We can lose connection to how we feel. We can override our sense of self." Jen Kemp on Interospection.

"It runs largely our of awareness for good reason. We don't have the words for it; we're not asked. Hear the poetry of people's lives. You can't convince people of this stuff. You need presence, with no words at all, to communicate, 'I know'." Kelly Wilson.

My renewed approval as a supervisor came through today. I have been supervising trainees on their pathways since 2018. This will help me keep nurturing our workforce over the next 5 years. I also want to acknowledge all the psychologists out there who mentor in our profession, including some of my own mentors, who choose not to jump through these hoops every 5 years, but do way more than I - you rebels 😏.
