DONNING vs DOFFING: IT IS NOT JUST PUTTING IT ON AND TAKING IT OFF
We talk a lot about getting compression garments on, but
getting them off matters too.
DONNING = putting your compression garment on.
DOFFING = taking your compression garment off.
When donning, the goal isn't simply to pull the garment into place. It needs to be gently worked into position so the fabric sits smoothly and evenly across the limb.
Bunching, folds and wrinkles can create areas of concentrated pressure. For some people, even a small fold in the wrong place can cause discomfort or significant pain.
Doffing deserves just as much attention.
Repeatedly pulling, yanking or gripping the same section of a garment can place unnecessary stress on the fabric and may shorten the life of the garment. It can also make removal difficult and uncomfortable, particularly when swelling, tenderness, reduced hand strength or limited mobility are involved.
If getting your compression garment on or off has become painful, difficult or exhausting, don't simply assume that this is something you have to put up with.
There may be a better technique, a different garment, an aid that can help, or another solution that makes compression easier and more manageable.
Talk to your lymphoedema therapist about donning and doffing techniques and finding the right solution for you.
