We don’t guess. We measure.

One of our principles at By Design is data-driven, athlete-centric care.

And when we say athlete, we don’t just mean someone playing competitive sport.

If you have a body you want to perform a task, whether that’s running 10km, returning to footy, lifting 100kg or confidently getting off the floor, we treat that goal like performance.

That means decisions aren’t made on feeling alone.

We use force decks.
We use dynamometry.
We track load.
We test strength.
We measure meaningful movements.
And most importantly, we retest.

Because “that feels a bit better” is useful information.

But so is:

You’re producing 20% more force.
Your side-to-side difference has reduced.
You’ve added 15kg to this movement.
You can now tolerate three running sessions instead of one.

The numbers don’t replace the person in front of us.

They give us another piece of the picture.

Your goals tell us where we’re going.
The data helps tell us whether we’re getting there.

Test. Train. Retest. Progress. 💪🏼

15/09/2026

Your physio session starts before you walk through the door.

There’s a reason we ask you to fill out your forms before your first appointment.

We actually read them. 😂

Your history, your pain, your training, your work, what you’ve already tried and, most importantly, what you want to get back to all give us context before we even meet you.

And the preparation doesn’t stop after session one.

Before you come back, we want to know:

What did we find last time?
What were we trying to change?
What should have improved by today?
What are we reassessing?
And what are we going to do if you’re better, the same OR worse?

Because good physiotherapy shouldn’t be walking into a room and asking, “Sooo… how have you been?” with absolutely no idea what happened last time. 😂

We care about outcomes.

And getting better outcomes means knowing where you’ve been, where you’re going and having a plan for what comes next.

Prepare. Measure. Adapt. Progress. 💪🏼

Where movement meets agency.

One of our biggest principles at By Design, whether you’re working with a physio in the clinic or an exercise scientist on the gym floor, is that we don’t want you to become dependent on us.

We want you to understand.

To know WHY you’re doing something.
To recognise the small wins.
To understand what pain does and doesn’t mean.
To know what you can keep doing.
And to feel confident making decisions about your own body.

Because uncertainty can be a huge part of the problem.

When pain is surrounded by fear, anxiety, catastrophising and a big cloud of “I don’t know what’s happening or what I’m allowed to do”, movement can start to feel pretty bloody scary.

So our job isn’t simply to give you exercises.

It’s to make the path forward clearer.

We educate. We expose you to movement. We build strength. We celebrate evidence of progress. And gradually, you need us less.

That’s agency.

Not just moving pain-free, but having the knowledge, confidence and capacity to get back to the things that matter to you.

Your body. Your movement. Your confidence. 💪🏼

The countdown is on.

Each week, our By Design team is giving you one thing to focus on to help get your body ready for the climb.

Whether you’re taking on the 10K or the half marathon, you’ve still got time to prepare well.

This week’s focus 👆🏼

That knee that aches after a long walk, complains on the stairs or seems to settle down only to flare up again?

You don’t have to wait until it becomes a major problem before doing something about it.

Physiotherapy can help us look at how your knee is moving, what activities tend to aggravate it, your current strength and capacity, and what may need to change to help you move forward.

Sometimes that means modifying what you’re doing for a period. Sometimes it means gradually building more strength and tolerance.

The important part is understanding your knee, rather than relying on a generic list of exercises from the internet.

If a ni**le keeps hanging around, it might be worth having it assessed.

We don’t want a team of physios who all think, treat and communicate exactly the same way.

Because the humans who walk through our doors aren’t all the same either.

Our team brings different backgrounds, cultures, sporting experiences, clinical interests and ways of connecting with people — and we think that makes us better.

There’s no single “perfect physio”. There’s the physio who’s the right fit for you.

When you book online, click on each physio’s name to learn a little more about who they are, what they love working with and their background.

Different humans need different humans. 💪🏽

Around menopause, women can lose a significant amount of bone density over a relatively short period.

And this should matter to your physio.

If you’re a woman in your 40s or 50s coming in with pain, recurring injuries or changes in what your body can tolerate, our job isn’t just to settle the sore bit.

We should be thinking about the bigger picture.

Are you strong enough for the life you want to live?
Are your bones getting enough loading stimulus?
Are we building muscle and capacity as you move through menopause?
And is your rehab actually preparing you for the decades ahead?

This is one of the reasons strength training forms such a big part of how we approach physiotherapy at By Design.

Your physio appointment shouldn’t just be about getting you out of pain.

It should also be an opportunity to build a stronger, more capable body for what comes next. 💪🏼

Your first physio appointment isn’t about rushing straight into treatment.

It starts with a conversation.

We want to understand what’s been bothering you, how it’s affecting your day-to-day life, what you’ve already tried and, importantly, what you want to get back to doing.

From there, we can assess how you’re moving and work out what the next steps might look like for you.

Sometimes that involves treatment. Sometimes exercise. Often, it’s a combination that changes as you progress.

The goal is to make sure there’s a reason behind what we’re doing - and that you understand the plan too.

When your back has been sore for a while, it’s understandable to start becoming cautious.

You stop lifting certain things. You avoid bending. You think twice before exercising. Eventually, it can feel like the safest option is to do less and less.

Physiotherapy can help you better understand what’s happening, identify movements or loads that are currently difficult, and work towards gradually rebuilding confidence and capacity.

That process will look different for everyone. For some people it may initially involve simple movement. For others, strength training can become part of the plan as things progress.

The goal isn’t to force you through pain.

It’s to help you understand what your body can tolerate now and work from there.

Everything works in balance.

In the gym, we think about this constantly.

Push + pull.
Front + back.
Medial + lateral.
Internal + external rotation.
Strength + mobility.
Load + recovery.

But balance doesn’t mean every muscle needs to be equally strong or your left and right sides need to be perfectly symmetrical.

It means understanding that nothing in the body works in isolation.

And neither does your health.

You can have the world’s best training program, but if you’re sleeping five hours, barely eating, stressed out of your mind and have no room left for the people and things you love… there’s probably another lever we need to look at.

That’s why at By Design we look beyond sets and reps to the bigger factors influencing how you feel and perform:

Training. Nutrition. Sleep. Stress management. Mindset. Community + connection.

We’re not here to perfectly control all six.

We’re here to help you understand them, recognise when one needs some attention, and give you the tools and accountability to make small changes where they matter.

Because feeling strong and capable isn’t built from one perfect exercise.

It’s built from the whole picture working together. 💪🏼
