What you actually get when you come to By Design:

✌🏻Your intake form done before you arrive, so no time wasted on paperwork in the room or reception
✌🏻Off street parking, no stress before you've even walked in
✌🏻Real private rooms, not curtains
✌🏻45 minutes for your first session, 30 for every one after, never rushed
✌🏻One physio, fully present the whole time, not typing notes mid conversation
✌🏻AI transcription handles the notes, so your physio can actually listen
✌🏻A real assessment, movement testing, strength testing, hands on therapy, whatever it takes to know for sure
✌🏻Two clear pathways depending on what you need. New pain gets calmed down first. Older pain gets moved faster, straight into building load and movement
✌🏻A clear plan by the end of session one. What we found, why, what we'd recommend. Always your choice
✌🏻Same session relief, that's what clients tell us, over and over

That's not luck. That's by design. ❤️

These aren't random goals. They're benchmarks backed by real fitness research, and most men can't hit them.

10 Things Every Man Aged 30 to 50 Should Be Able to Do:

1. Run 2.4 km in under 12 minutes. The 2.4 km test is the standard used in Australian defence and emergency services fitness. It tests your engine.
2. Bench press your bodyweight. Real upper body pressing strength.
3. Deadlift 1.5 to 2x your bodyweight. The single best marker of total body strength.
4. Back squat 1.25 to 1.5x your bodyweight. Strong legs are how you stay mobile for life.
5. Do 8 unassisted pull-ups. How strong you are for your size.
6. Perform 25 push-ups on your toes. Pushing endurance and a stable trunk.
7. Hold a plank for 2 minutes. Real core control, not just abs.
8. Touch your toes with straight knees. Posterior chain mobility most men lose by 40.
9. Farmer's carry your full bodyweight for 50 metres. Grip, trunk and the most functional strength there is.
10. Do 15 full burpees without stopping. Strength and conditioning under fatigue.

These aren't elite numbers. They're what a healthy, capable body should do. If you can't hit most of them, that's not a reason to feel bad. It's a starting point.

This is exactly what we build at By Design in North Hobart. Structured, physio-designed strength training that takes you from wherever you are to genuinely strong.

At By Design, we know that people rarely remember the exercise prescription.

They remember how their physiotherapist made them feel.

They remember feeling listened to.
They remember finally understanding what was happening in their body.
They remember leaving with a plan.
They remember feeling hopeful, capable and confident to take the next step.

That’s why we value the qualities that sit behind good rehabilitation just as much as clinical knowledge.

Our team strives to bring the six C’s to every session:

💪 Competent - We stay curious, continue learning and use assessment to guide decision-making.

😊 Compassionate - We recognise that pain, injury and setbacks can be frustrating, and we meet people where they are.

🧠 Clear - We explain our findings, answer questions and help people understand the “why” behind their plan.

😌 Calm - Recovery doesn’t always happen in a straight line. We aim to provide reassurance and perspective when things feel uncertain.

✨ Confident - We guide people through progressive challenges, helping them build trust in what their bodies can do.

🔁 Consistent - Small actions, repeated over time, often lead to meaningful change.

At the end of the day, physiotherapy isn’t just about reducing symptoms. It’s about helping people develop the capacity, knowledge and confidence to get back to doing more of what matters to them.

Tasmania's best hiking season is nearly here. The question is whether your legs are ready for kunanyi, the Overland, or a full day on the Tasman Peninsula.

Most people think hiking is a fitness thing. It's not. It's whether your legs, hips and feet can handle hours on uneven ground and the downhill load that wrecks people, usually on the way down, usually on the last day.

Can you pass the Hike Ready Test?
We've split it by age, because the standard should match you.

If you're under 50:

Single leg balance, 45 seconds each side, eyes closed
Sit to stand, 30 in 60 seconds, no hands
Step ups, 20 each leg holding 10 kg
Single leg calf raises, 30 each side
Pack carry, 12 kg for 20 minutes

If you're over 50:

Single leg balance, 30 seconds each side, eyes open
Sit to stand, 20 in 60 seconds, no hands
Step ups, 15 each leg
Single leg calf raises, 20 each side
Pack carry, 8 kg for 15 minutes

Pass them all and you're in good shape for the trails. Fail one and you've just found the exact thing to train before summer, before it finds you halfway up a mountain.

We run Hike Ready Assessments at By Design in North Hobart, then build the strength to close the gaps. Get strong before the season, not sore during it.

Strength training is one of the most valuable tools we have to support recovery, improve function and build confidence in the body.

Whether you’re managing osteoarthritis, returning from a fracture, rebuilding after a sprain, or simply wanting to feel stronger in everyday life, developing capacity matters.

At By Design Physio & Strength, we combine thorough assessment, education and progressive strength training to help people better understand their bodies and build the physical qualities needed to do more of what they love.

For some people, that means returning to sport. For others, it’s carrying the groceries with ease, keeping up with the kids, travelling confidently, or feeling capable in the gym again.

We believe movement is a great place to start, but strength is what helps people build resilience for the long term.

If you could feel stronger in one area of your life, what would it be? 💪

Lbh, who’s listening to my heavy breathing between sets 😂💪🏻

Cheers to getting stronger on Friday! 🔥

Life is too short to sit on the sidelines because your body doesn’t feel capable.

At By Design Physio & Strength, our goal is simple: help people build stronger, more resilient bodies so they can continue doing the things that matter to them.

Whether that’s getting back to sport, keeping up with your kids, travelling confidently, returning to the gym, or simply feeling more comfortable tackling everyday tasks, strength is one of the most valuable tools we have.

We know injuries, pain and setbacks can be frustrating. That’s why we take the time to understand what matters to you, explain our findings, and develop a clear plan to improve your capacity over time.

Because life is better when your body feels like an asset, not a limitation.

What is one activity you would love to feel stronger or more confident doing? 💪

This isn't about looking a certain way. It's about what your body can still do in 20, 30, 40 years.
The research is clear. The simplest physical tests, getting off the floor, balancing on one leg, standing from a chair, are some of the strongest predictors of how long and how well you'll live. Not how you look. What you can do.

Can you pass the Longevity Test?

Get off the floor without using your hands. Strength, mobility and balance in one move.
Stand on one leg for 10 seconds. Balance predicts fall risk, and falls are what end independence.
Carry your shopping up a flight of stairs without stopping. Real world leg and lung capacity.
Sit to stand from a low chair 10 times. The strength that keeps you out of a carer's hands.
Reach overhead without pain. Shoulders you can use for life.
Walk 5 km without stopping. The baseline of a body that still goes where you want it.

You don't lose these because you get old. You lose them because you stop training them. And the best time to start protecting them is decades before you need them.

This is the whole point of what we do at By Design in North Hobart. Strength training designed to keep you capable for life, not just for now.

Message us STRONG and we'll test where you stand.

Most people think the hardest part of strength training is the workout.

It’s not.

It’s finding a place you actually want to come back to.

Every morning you’ll find people walking through our doors before work, fitting training around busy lives, catching up with coaches, celebrating little wins, and slowly becoming stronger than they were a few months ago.

Some are recovering from injuries.
Some are learning to lift for the very first time.
Some are chasing PBs.
Others simply want to keep up with their kids or feel confident in their own body again.

Different goals.
Same atmosphere.

Good people.
Great coaching.
A space where everyone belongs.

This is what we’ve always wanted By Design to feel like. 🧡💪🏻
