If you're choosing to eat less farmed salmon, the next question is usually...
What should I eat instead?
Rather than avoiding a food without a plan, I encourage people to choose seafood that's both nutritious and sustainably sourced.
Some of my top choices include:
π¦ͺ Oysters & mussels: incredibly sustainable and packed with nutrients.
π Australian-farmed barramundi: a responsibly managed alternative that's widely available.
π Land-based farmed Murray cod: low environmental impact.
π¦ Southern calamari: from well-managed Australian fisheries.
π Sardines & anchovies: rich in omega-3s, affordable, and one of the most sustainable seafood choices available.
π¦ Wild-caught Australian rock lobster: sustainably managed and a seafood choice that's especially close to my heart as the daughter of a commercial fisherman.
π£ If salmon is your preference, look for wild-caught Alaskan salmon with MSC certification, which offers a very different nutritional and environmental profile to farmed Atlantic salmon.
One of the best resources available is the GoodFish Guide from the Australian Marine Conservation Society. It uses a simple green, amber and red system to help you make informed seafood choices based on sustainability and current scientific evidence.
The aim is to choose seafood that supports both our health and the long-term health of our oceans.
