Last month Dr Sophie Briggs returned to her former high school, Clarence High to share her journey and insights into a career in General Practice. 🩺🎓

As part of the careers session, Sophie joined a panel alongside healthcare professionals from a range of domains. The panel explored the pathways into their careers, what they love about their work, and some of the challenges they have encountered along the way. 💬👩‍⚕️

“It was really interesting to hear the perspectives of the students and the reasons they’re inspired to consider careers in health and allied health,” Dr Briggs said. “We had the opportunity to answer their questions and share some of our experiences along the way. Although one student did ask if I’m scared of blood!” 😂 🩸

The session was supported by Beacon Foundation, a national not for profit organisation based in Hobart. For more than 35 years, Beacon has worked with schools, businesses and communities to bring real world relevance to education, inspire young people to explore career pathways, and provide opportunities to experience the workplace long before leaving school. 🌱💡

It was a wonderful opportunity for Dr Briggs to return to where her own journey began and connect with the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Have you ever wondered what happens during a skin check? ☀️

At Australian Family Medical Skin Cancer Centre, during our skin checks we use both dermatoscopes (a hand held illuminated magnifying lens) as well as FotoFinder, an advanced camera and computer system. 😎

Our skin checks start with a thorough hand held dermatoscopic assessment of your skin. After this, our doctors use FotoFinder high-resolution imaging technology to capture detailed images of your skin and lesions. These images help with lesion diagnosis and are able to be compared over time to monitor for changing skin lesions. Our doctors then provide advice tailored to your individual needs and may reccomend future treatment such as a biopsy or lesion excision, which is usually booked in for a future date. 💚

What can you expect during a skin check?
✔️ A full-body examination by an experienced skin doctor
✔️ High-resolution FotoFinder images of moles and other skin lesions
✔️ Documentation to compare with images at future appointments
✔️ A treatment plan for any suspicious lesions (eg. booking for biopsy or excision)
✔️ Personalised advice on monitoring your skin and recognising changes
✔️ A focus on your privacy and comfort throughout the appointment

We’re excited to introduce you to Dr Claire Howells, the newest member of our GP team! 👏

Originally from Tasmania, Dr Claire (she/her/hers) studied medicine at the University of Tasmania, graduating in 2014 and has worked at the Royal Hobart Hospital, Launceston General Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital before moving into General Practice. 🏥

Claire enjoys all aspects of General Practice, with a special passion for providing ongoing, holistic care to patients and families. 💚

Her areas of interest include:
👶 Child & adolescent health
🌸 Women’s health
🩺 Allergy medicine
💛 Holistic, ongoing care for patients and families

She brings additional qualifications in these areas, including a Diploma of Child Health and the FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health (theory). Claire also has extensive experience working in paediatrics, and has extended skills in Allergy Medicine, an area she continues to work in. 😍

Outside of work, Claire loves being a mum, baking, keeping active, and slowly learning how to garden. 🌱🧁

We know that our community is going to love Claire and we're so lucky she's joining our team!

With lots of new followers joining us, we thought it was the perfect time for a little re-introduction to Australian Family Medical. 👋

We’re a family owned medical clinic, led by Tasmanian sibling GPs Drs Emma & Jay Shoemaker! Our mission is simple, to create a GP clinic that looks after its team just as well as it looks after patients. Because we believe you can’t pour from an empty cup and the best care comes from people who are happy and supported by their clinic. We think this is key to providing exceptional healthcare to our community, ensuring everyone feels supported and cared for. 💚 🩺

Through this approach in just two years, we’ve grown from two GPs and our family on reception, to now a team to 17 doctors, 7 nursing staff and 7 admin queens. We’ve also opened a dedicated Skin Cancer Centre too! 🌞 We hope that our team sticks around for the long haul which means our patients get to have the long term continuity of care that’s becoming hard to find these days. 🙌

We’re also thrilled to report that we’ve managed to keep the sibling bickering minimal in the making and running of Australian Family Medical! 😅

Amanda is joining us four days a week starting on the 24th August and her books are now open! Amanda is welcoming new and existing patients to see her here at Australian Family Medical where she will be working Monday’s, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday’s. 📆

About Amanda 👩‍⚕️
Amanda previously worked in human resources and workers compensation before going back to university to study medicine. 🎓 She graduated from UTAS in 2011 and worked in Burnie for several years before moving to Hobart. During her medical career Amanda has completed a Diploma of Child Health and has also worked at Family Planning. Amanda enjoys the variety of medical presentations in General Practice. 💚
