What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is being here in the present moment, whatever this means for you right now, in this point in your own life.
This requires an innocence to this moment, a full openness to exactly what this moment is.
An important and therefore pivotal understanding here is that our minds can never be made innocent through experience. It is the letting go of experience that brings about the positive state of innocence. This innocence cannot be cultivated by thought because thought is never innocent. Innocence is a seperate thing to thought. Both exist together. Mindfulness is the ending of the dominance of thought. If there is no mindfulness, you are like a blind person in a world of great beauty, light and colour. If you like wander by the seashore and let this meditative quality come upon you. If it does, don’t try to grab it or pursue it. What you pursue will be the memory of what it was and ‘what was’ is the death of ‘what is’. Merely let it be, as it will grow by itself. When you wander among the hills, if this is what you find yourself doing, or wherever you take time to wander, let everything tell you the beauty and the pain of life, so that you awaken to your own sorrow and to the ending of it. Mindfulness is the root, the plant, the flower and the fruit. Mindfulness is the ending of sorrow, and the beginnings of joy.
