It has now been 12 months since the team at TasWomen moved their obstetric services to Calvary.

HUGE thanks goes to the team at Calvary, who facilitated the integration of new midwives, new obstetricians, new administration team members, and an enormous renovation. The unit now has more birth suits (including baths), a new SCN, and more rooms for postnatal families.

Without the commitment for ALL involved in maternity care in the private sector, and the funding put forward, this would not have been possible.

Having choice for maternity services is vital. It also reduces the volume in p***c, ensuring the sustainability of this equally valued system.

Thank you to Calvary Healthcare for your commitment to maternity services for the families in Southern Tasmania.

TasWomen is delighted to have Dr Inger Olesen join the team.

Inger is an Obstetric Physician, and the first ever obstetric physician in Tasmania!!

An Obstetric Physician is a physician who has specialised in managing the medical aspects of high risk pregnancies, including pregnancy's with diabetes, renal disease, heart disease, thyroid disease, connective tissues diseases, and cancer during pregnancy. They also provide medical advice when pregnancy's develop high risk complications such as pre-eclampsia or cholestasis of pregnancy. They work with your obstetrician and midwife, to maximise your healthcare safety during and after pregnancy (but do not attend the birth).

Inger will be available for pre pregnancy counselling (irrespective of where you birth), pregnancy consultations, and intrapartum and post partum consultations.

I often have patients ask me about our model at TasWomen, which has Womens Health GPs work alongside Gynaecologists (as well as other allied health, nursing, midwifery, and soon to be physician specialists).

This collaborative WH GP and Gynae model truly facilitates timely communication. It also often reduces cost for patients, with our Gynaecology specialists often providing clinical advice and information to our WH GP's, without any additional cost to patients. Our Womens Health GP's also share their wider clinical knowledge, which can add to our ability to facilitate holistic healthcare as gynaecologists.

We also willingly take phone calls from external GP's, and have established working relationships with many clinics and external GP providers. Our Women's Health GP's often work alongside our patients primary GP's, to supplement areas of women healthcare that some GP might not choose to work in.

It's a truly wonderful model of collaborative care

Do you know that we have a free service that will support your reproductive healthcare.

We know that somewhere between 25-45% of pregnancies are unplanned. This often creates a period of uncertainty.

If you find yourself in this situation, you can have a FREE non-judgmental, trauma-informed, patient-centred discussion about your reproductive choices with Pregnancy Choices Tasmanian - run by Womens Health Tasmania via https://www.pregnancychoicestas.org.au

Your GP, gynaecologist, or psychologist might also be able to provide you with resources, to best support you during this time.

Today brings the official announcement that Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) has been renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

This is such an important step towards improving our research, care and conversations on PCOS, now PMOS.

For the 1 in 10 women (or those AFAB) with PCOS/PMOS, the health implication are high including; higher rates of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, raised BMI, higher risk pregnancy's, infertility, menstrual irregularity and infertility, skin changes, mental health issues and more. These change do not relate to lifestyle choices, but significant underlying metabolic and hormonal abnormalities.

PMOS is an overlap area, where women often benefit from both a gynaecologist as well as endocrinologist, with their GP at the centre of their care. Having a dietitian or nutritionist, as well, as exercise physiologist in the team can also be incredibly valuable.

For more information, check out this link https://internationalendo.com/pcos-new-name-pmos/

PCOS has been renamed PMOS — polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome. Learn why the new name matters for hormones, metabolism, ovarian function, diagnosis, stigma, care, and the syndrome-based view of women’s health.

Happy Mothers Day 💕

ALL the amazing women in our lives who lift us up and love us unconditionally.

Being a mother has been my greatest (& at times the most exhausting) JOY. Not everyone gets this gift, and without IVF/reproductive support, it would not have been my journey. Special shout out to those who mother in other ways, especially those who didn’t get to carry a child but wanted too.

Also have to acknowledge all the FIRST time mothers in 2026. Hopefully a sleep-in was gifted this morning to each of you!

And lastly, shout out to my wonderful MIL who I walked for this morning. Cancer sadly took her life too early, but she is never forgotten. X

Did you know that today the UK has approved a bill that will ban children aged 17 (that's anyone born after Jan 1st 2009) and under from buying ci******es during their lifetime. https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/article/uk-agrees-ban-on-cigarette-sales-for-people-born-after-2008/

This step is long overdue in Tasmania (and all of Australia).

Tasmania has higher smoking rates than the mainland. We know smoking impacts so many chronic diseases and cancer rates, as well as increases your complications with surgery, pregnancy, and childhood health. With higher rates of infection, preterm birth, placental concerns, stillbirth, asthma and other chronic respiratory disease, we should want a smoking ban if we want healthier families. Our Tassie community deserves great healthcare.

If Tasmania is aiming to be the Healthiest Island in the World, this is one of many steps we must see our politicians & healthcare organizations be bold and consider. Please consider writing to your local MP to bring this essential change to Tasmania. Now is the time to drive healthcare change for next generations.
