𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 🌎💚 Today I’m going to be vulnerable for a minute.
As a massage therapist and care provider, no one tells you that people 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲 you’re always ok. We provide a therapeutic and rehabilitative service, and so it’s natural to assume your therapist is healthy, well, and able to offer these services.
We have to be ok. Can’t afford not to be. 🤷♀️
But what’s also interesting is that people don’t think to ask. It’s our job to be well and provide care, so our community often also 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝘀 we’re invincible.
Health, fitness and massage industries attract selfless and generous caregivers, people who dedicate their lives to looking after the wellbeing of others. The role requires empathy, presence, and kindness - so it’s essential to learn skills for recognising burnout, and recharging our own batteries.
When we study to be therapists, we’re not told about this expectation we’re always ok. It’s something that just occurs over time and you become used to it. It’s a culture of stoicism. I find this fascinating, and yet enormously sad too.
Clients know to expect stellar service -which is brilliant! (Thanks guys 🫶) but it’s easy to forget that we are human, and occasionally have ups & downs too. We are not robots.
Today on World Mental Health Day, I encourage you to check in with your friends and family that provide care in a work capacity. Ask them how they are. Chances are they might really appreciate it.
And for all you therapists (I see you!!) make sure you reach out to each other too. 🙌✨
