Nyrstar is a well-known part of the Hobart landscape – we are located on the Derwent estuary and have been contributing to the community for over 100 years. We are one of the world’s largest producing zinc smelters and our products are exported to global markets. We have a team of around 600 people (both direct and contract employees) and are a major contributor to Tasmania’s economy. Our priority

The strong relationship the smelter has with our community has been developed over many years and continues today, through community meetings, sponsorships, partnerships and active participation in the community. We are one of the world’s largest zinc smelters in terms of production volume. We produce zinc from concentrate: special high grade (SHG), zinc galvanising alloys, and zinc die casting alloys are all produced from our zinc smelting process. We convert the raw material into zinc metal for use in numerous end-use applications. Zinc provides excellent corrosion resistance to iron and steel. It is also a relatively hard metal with a low melting point, making it suitable for die casting, but still soft enough to be formed, rolled, or extruded. Zinc can be found in everything from construction and infrastructure to transport and industrial machinery, from communications to electronics, and from consumer products to human health.
