Perinatal mental health is about so much more than postnatal depression. It can include anxiety, grief, trauma, difficulties adjusting to parenthood, challenges with bonding and attachment, or simply having thoughts and feelings you don't know how to put into words.

And support isn't just for mums. Dads and partners can also experience big emotional changes as they navigate pregnancy, birth and the transition into parenthood.

At The Crawley Clinic, Laura and Carsten have a particular interest in supporting parents through this important life stage.

Laura supports parents and infants across the perinatal journey, with a focus on perinatal anxiety and depression, bonding, attachment and adjustment to parenting.

Carsten has a special interest in men's mental health and supporting new dads, including helping fathers strengthen their emotional wellbeing, relationships and family connections.

You don't have to wait until things feel unbearable to reach out. Sometimes, having a safe and non-judgemental space to talk can make all the difference.

💬 What's something about becoming a parent that you wish someone had told you?

It has been a burning priority of ours since WAY before Covid ... ensuring that the people in our communities who couldn't get to our rooms could still access the therapy they need. It started back in about 2014, when Tess was working in Triabunna, one of our rural communities here in Lutruwita/Tasmania. She found herself frustrated by how hard it was for her farming clients to get away from the farm to access psychological care with her. She found herself complaining to a visiting GP - "If only Medicare offered rebates for phone sessions!" (Because back then, they didn't.) That was the first of many conversations that led to us offering support via telephone and video conferencing long before anyone had ever heard of Zoom. Now we call it telehealth, and we love it for the same reason Tess did back in 2014 ... accessibility, convenience, and yes, it is as effective as face-to-face sessions. Because in the end, what matters is WHETHER you connect with your therapist - not HOW you connect. So no matter your reason, we'd love to support you via telehealth - whether you live around the corner from our office, or on the other side of the country. We're experienced, we're compassionate ... And we're here to help.

p.s. And these days, with a mental health plan and a referral from your GP, Medicare does indeed offer a rebate for those phone sessions!
