TEA BREAKS “Did someone say tea break?”

The Expectation:
A hot beverage, a sweet treat and a moment to catch your breath.

The Reality:
A frantic dash for a sip of water while running on empty.

For nurses and midwives, a “tea break” shouldn’t be a mythical creature you hear about but never actually see. Skipping rest periods and working through without time to hydrate has become far too normal.

We’re fighting for paid tea breaks so our members have a genuine opportunity to stop, hydrate and reset during their shift.

Your breaks matter. Your safety matters. The ANMF has your back.

The Bring Your Own Bed campaign started in 2018.

Eight years on, the pressure on Tasmania’s emergency departments remains.

ED presentations increased by 13,309 between 2020–21 and 2024–25.

ON LEAVE... “Enjoy your day off!”

The Expectation:
A day off. Coffee. Bed. Peace. Finally, some time to recharge.

The Reality:
PING! “We’re short-staffed and need you to come into work.”

A day off should be a day off. Nurses and midwives need genuine time away from work to rest, recover and spend time with the people and things that matter outside the job. That’s why the right to disconnect matters.

You shouldn’t have to spend your days off wondering whether your phone is about to ring.

The ANMF has your back. We’re continuing to fight for stronger protections for our members through EBA26.

Celebrating Aged Care Workers

The celebrations continue for Aged Care Employee Day, throughout the month of August!

Our ANMF Organisers have been out and about visiting aged care workplaces across Tasmania, recognising and thanking the incredible care workers who make such a difference every single day.

Thank you for the compassion, dedication and care you bring to your work and for the dignity and quality of life you provide to older Tasmanians.

If you’re an aged care worker and you’re not yet an ANMF member, now is a great time to join the union that has your back.

TEA BREAKS... “The break that never was”

The Expectation:
Two colleagues, two cakes, a coffee and a laugh.

The Reality:
Sitting wherever you can, trying to catch your breath while the next call demands your attention.

Sometimes the closest thing to a tea break is sitting down for 30 seconds before the next job starts. Nurses and midwives deserve time to stop, breathe, hydrate and recharge, because you can’t keep running on empty.

That’s why the ANMF is fighting for paid tea breaks for our members.
We’ll keep pushing. You keep standing with us.

ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd provides an update following two days of public sector negotiations.

The ANMF continues to work through members’ log of claims with the Tasmanian Government, with negotiations continuing weekly.

At this stage, there is no formal offer on the table.

The ANMF remains committed to securing an outcome that recognises and values the nurses and midwives who care for Tasmanians, delivers safe staffing across our health system, and protects and improves members’ conditions and entitlements.

Stay tuned for further updates.

"A day off and the right to disconnect."

The Expectation:
A day off with friends. Good company, good times, and absolutely no thoughts about work.

The Reality:
Smile for the selfie! “Hi! We’re short-staffed. Can you come in?”

Your days off are for you, not for waiting to see whether your phone rings. Nurses and midwives deserve the right to switch off, disconnect and enjoy their time away from work without feeling pressured to come in.

That’s why the ANMF is fighting for a right to disconnect as part of better working conditions for our members. Because being committed to your patients shouldn’t mean being permanently on call.

Your time matters. Your life outside work matters. And the ANMF has your back.
