TEA BREAKS... “Just one minute…”

The Expectation:
A peaceful coffee and cake.
Five minutes to breathe, recharge and catch up with a colleague.

The Reality:
“Can you just look at this?”
“Do you know where this is?”
“Can you help me with this?”

For nurses and midwives, finding five minutes to stop can feel like a competitive sport. We’re fighting for paid tea breaks because stopping to rest, hydrate and reset should be part of a safe working day, not something you have to feel guilty about.

The ANMF is at the table, advocating for our members as EBA26 negotiations continue.

SAFE STAFFING ... “A full roster…”

The Expectation:
Six nurses. Fully staffed. Happy faces. Everyone has support.

The Reality: “Can you stay back?”
Two are not available. Two are doing a double shift. Everyone else is wondering how they’re going to get through it.

When staffing levels don’t match the workload, everyone feels it... nurses, midwives and, most importantly, the patients and families we care for.

Safe staffing isn’t a luxury. It’s essential.

The ANMF is continuing to advocate for staffing provisions that recognise the reality of your workload.

Andrew Brakey Awards 2026 - Celebrating Excellence across our Health Services

We are proud to announce the winners of this year’s Andrew Brakey Awards, recognising outstanding nurses and midwives who demonstrate exceptional commitment, leadership and contribution to their profession and the people they care for.

This year, we received an incredible 39 nominations and applications, a wonderful reflection of the calibre, dedication and contribution of those nominated. We congratulate every nominee on this well-deserved recognition.

TEA BREAKS... “Cake? What cake?”

The Expectation:
A coffee, a cupcake and five glorious minutes to yourself.

The Reality:
Searching the desert for water like it’s the last bottle on Earth.

The cupcake was supposed to come with a coffee break...
Instead, you’re just trying to find enough time to have a drink of water.

Nurses and midwives deserve paid tea breaks, not breaks that disappear when the shift gets busy.

The ANMF Tasmanian Branch is continuing to fight for better conditions for our members as EBA26 negotiations continue.

WE SAID IT IN 2018. IT’S STILL NOT FIXED IN 2026.

Eight years ago, we stood up and called for action.

We’re still waiting.

Patients deserve timely care. Nurses and midwives deserve action. And our health system cannot keep asking staff and patients to bear the cost of a problem that hasn’t been fixed.

Care can’t flow when the system is blocked.

The time for action is now.

2018 → 2026. Same problem. Time for change.

What’s happening at the Royal Hobart Hospital is a clear example of a bigger issue. Bike theft and damage. Security concerns. Inadequate facilities. Staff facing risks after hours.

TASMANIA’S NURSES AND MIDWIVES NEED YOUR VOICE.

Proposed changes to the Tasmanian Industrial Commission could make it harder for healthcare workers to raise concerns, resolve disputes and advocate for safe workplaces.

At a time when Tasmania is already under pressure to attract and retain healthcare workers, we should be strengthening their voice, not weakening it. Nurses and midwives speak up every day for their patients, their colleagues and their community. Now we’re asking you to speak up for them. Send a message to Deputy Premier Guy Barnett.

We know what needs to be done. The reforms have been identified, the commitments have been made, now it's time to deliver.
