Degenerative disc disease (DDD) refers to age-related changes within the spinal discs 🦴 While these changes don’t always cause symptoms, they can sometimes contribute to pain, stiffness or nerve irritation ⚡
As discs degenerate, they may:
💧 Lose hydration: Becoming less flexible and resilient.
📉 Lose disc height: Reducing the space between neighbouring vertebrae.
🌀 Develop small cracks or tears: Particularly within the outer annulus of the disc.
🦴 Bulge or herniate: Which may occur as the structure of the disc changes.
⚙️ Alter spinal loading: Increasing stress through surrounding joints and tissues.
⚡ Irritate nearby nerves: In some cases, reduced space or disc changes can contribute to radiating pain, tingling or numbness.
