🥳 Paid prac for allied health! 🥳

Psychology is one of 10 Allied Health disciplines that will be added to the list of courses eligible for the Commonwealth Prac Payment, along with:
- physiotherapy
- occupational therapy
- speech pathology
- paramedicine
- radiography
- pharmacy
- rehabilitation therapies
- audiology
- podiatry

Very welcome news, this will reduce financial pressures and support so many more students to continue in their studies, and/or to manage to feed themselves while they do.

(Media release: https://www.pm.gov.au/media/government-expands-paid-prac-strengthen-medicare )

In a huge win for psychology, the Government has announced the Commonwealth Prac Payment program will be extended to psychology students from 1 July 2027.

Building on years of sustained advocacy by the APS, along with the allied health sector, this important win for our profession will allow all psychology students completing placements to access support during their studies.

The APS has pushed for this for years, through pre-budget submissions, meetings with Ministers, and a petition tabled with Independent MPs as recently as June.

This is the outcome we have been fighting for.

Official briefing documents currently define the Government's use of the term "clinical psychology" as, 'courses leading to registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia’ - a description that goes well beyond the clinical endorsement alone.

Psychology is not just clinical psychology.

We have spoken directly with the Government and confirmed this is a matter of incorrect wording, that will be amended in future.

Today’s announcement means all psychology students are covered. Because all psychology students deserve to be covered.

We will have more detail on this soon and will continue to share it as it comes to hand.

Some tip-top parenting advice from Max. Unfortunately you can't get a referral to see Max, as he was just on a brief school holiday secondment to Physiotherapy & Pilates, and has now returned to his usual position of Grade 2 Student.

An excellent list of small ways to have humans - big and small - at our best. I would humbly submit one small addition, although I have not run this past Max: "Give a drink of water or a snack (or perhaps both?)".

[Image reads: If you have kids you should: 1. Be Kind. 2. Be helpful. 3. Do good things for them. 4. give them time outside. Written in kid's handwriting on a whiteboard. The number 4 has a starburst.]
