When did children become consumers of irreversible medical treatments?

We recognise that children lack the maturity to make decisions about alcohol, gambling and cosmetic procedures. Yet somehow, when it comes to gender medicine, we are prepared to accept their expressed wishes as justification for interventions with potentially lifelong consequences.

Following Saturday’s Coalition Advancing Scientific Care (CASC) conference in Adelaide, my column today argues that we have confused compassion with compliance.

Children experiencing gender distress deserve care, understanding and psychological support. But sometimes the most responsible thing a healthcare professional can do is say no.

There was some extraordinary irony in watching students call for violence — even death — against a political opponent while simultaneously denouncing her as a fascist.

And in watching young Australians use the freedoms afforded to them by a democratic, capitalist society — freedom of speech, assembly and political dissent — to advocate for communism.

Young people should engage in politics. But we should also be teaching them to interrogate ideas, understand history and recognise contradictions.

A diagnosis can be incredibly valuable. It can provide answers, guide treatment, open doors to support and help people make sense of experiences that may have felt confusing for years.
But a diagnosis is meant to describe a pattern of symptoms – not define the whole person.
When we begin to see ourselves, or our children, only through the lens of a diagnosis, we risk overlooking strengths, potential, responsibility and the capacity for growth.
Whether it’s autism, ADHD, anxiety or another condition, a diagnosis should be the beginning of understanding, not the end of the story.

Somewhere along the way, schools seem to have decided that teaching children how to feel is just as important as teaching them how to read, writes psychologist Clare Rowe. ▶️ https://bit.ly/3SqnGla

Anzac Day reminds us of courage, sacrifice and quiet strength.
These are qualities we honour without hesitation in those who have served. But outside of this moment, the way we talk about those same traits can become far less clear.
In my latest piece for the AFR, I reflect on the mixed messages we send to men - and what that means for boys growing up today.

New on The Rowe Report
There has been a quiet shift in therapy.
Patients are no longer just presenting with symptoms - they are arriving with the diagnosis, and an expectation that it will be confirmed.
Being heard matters. But when validation replaces assessment, something important is lost.
This piece explores the growing inversion of roles in clinical care - and why stepping back from proper assessment is not compassion.
It’s an abdication of clinical responsibility.
