Here's a number that should stop you scrolling: roughly 8 in 10 Australian teenagers aren't moving enough — and around 9 in 10 are over the recommended screen time. 📱
That's the reality for a lot of kids right now. School at a desk, homework on a screen, downtime on the couch with a phone or a binge-watch. The body that's built to run, climb and muck around outside is spending more of its day folded into a chair.
And it's not just a "kids these days" thing — across all ages, sitting has quietly become our default setting. Long stretches at a desk, in the car, on the couch. Movement is the thing our spines are actually designed for, and we're doing less and less of it.
Here's why it matters: prolonged sitting and inactivity are linked to a rise in back pain and spinal health concerns — and back pain doesn't stop at the body. It feeds into stress, fatigue and low mood, in kids and adults alike.
The fix isn't a gym membership or a grand plan. It's movement, often. Get up every 30–40 minutes. Swap one screen session for a walk, a kick of the footy, a bit of backyard chaos. Small, regular movement beats the occasional big effort every time.
It's Spinal Health Month, and the message holds for every age: a healthy spine supports a healthy mind.

Kids’ Spinal Health: A healthy spine supports a growing mind.

Modern lifestyle habits are putting young, developing spines under pressure. Back pain and poor posture become more common as children get older - often linked to falls, sports, heavy school bags, poor sleep habits and inactivity from too much screen time.

Prevention is the best protection. Small changes today can make a lifelong difference.
✔ Encourage daily movement and play
✔ Check backpack weight and fit
✔ Break up screen time
✔ Support good posture at home and school

Strong spinal health supports not just physical development, but overall wellbeing. Healthy habits start young, and when poor posture and lifestyle behaviours go unchecked, they can form lifelong patterns that follow children into adulthood.

This Spinal Health Month, take a proactive approach to your child’s spinal health. Adjust your family's thinking and join the Spinal Health Month (1–30 June) Movement.

For a lot of blokes out here, a sore back isn't a reason to stop. You push through it. There's stock to move, a fence to fix, a job to finish, a family counting on you.

But here's the thing about pushing through: it adds up.

Repetitive lifting, long days on your feet, the twisting and pulling that comes with the work — it puts real strain on your spine over time. And when your back's at you day after day, it doesn't stop at the body. The ACA's 2026 data shows nearly 70% of people with back pain say it hits their mental health too — and for men, it often lands as one more thing to carry. Work pressure. Money. Family. Add a body that hurts every morning and the whole load gets heavier.

It shows up in the stuff that matters most, too. Less patience with the kids. Shorter fuse. Too wrecked at the end of the day to be the bloke you want to be.
The good news: caught early, back pain is far easier to deal with than once it's chronic — and right now, long-term back pain is climbing fast (30% of sufferers in 2024, up to 44% in 2026). The blokes who get on top of it early are the ones who stay working and stay moving.

It's Spinal Health Month, and the message is simple: a healthy spine supports a healthy mind.

💻 Spend hours seated at a computer for work, gaming or study?

Long periods of sitting and inactivity can increase your risk of back pain - often linked to poor posture, incorrect ergonomics and repetitive strain. Over time, this can contribute to musculoskeletal issues and, if left unmanaged can lead to chronic spinal health conditions.

Common signs to watch for:
⚠️ Headaches
⚠️ Neck, shoulder and upper back pain
⚠️ Postural changes over time

Back pain doesn’t just affect the body - it can also impact mental wellbeing, contributing to stress and fatigue.

Adjust your thinking. Prevention starts with simple habits:
✅ Sit upright and stay relaxed
✅ Take regular movement and stretching breaks
✅ Set your screen at eye level
✅ Use a supportive, ergonomic chair
✅ Mix sitting with standing where possible

Nearly 9 in 10 of us will deal with back pain this year. Let that sink in. 🧠

It's June — Spinal Health Month — and this year's ACA data tells a story most of us already feel in our own bodies.

Back pain isn't just sore. It's chronic now more than ever: the number of Australians living with long-term back pain jumped from 30% in 2024 to 44% in 2026. And it doesn't stay in your back — close to 70% of people with back pain say it affects their mental health too. The aches follow you into your mood, your sleep, your patience with the kids.

Most of it traces back to how we live and work: desks, screens, long stretches of sitting, the lift-and-twist of manual jobs. It adds up — to the tune of $55.1 billion a year across the country.

Here's the hopeful part: a lot of this is preventable. Movement breaks. Smarter lifting. Getting on top of niggles before they settle in. And knowing when to get a professional set of eyes on what your body's doing.

This Spinal Health Month, the theme says it plainly: a healthy spine supports a healthy mind.

We're an ACA practice right here in Inverell 🌳 — so if back pain is changing how you work, move or feel, come have a chat. Free resources are at spinalhealth.org.au.

With over 6.1 million Australians affected by musculoskeletal disorders, and back pain a leading cause of disability, the need for prevention and early intervention has never been greater.

Gentle reminder: progress isn’t linear. 🌿

Some weeks you’ll feel incredible. Others might feel like you’ve taken a step back. Both are completely normal parts of the process.

What matters most is that you keep showing up for yourself.
