šŸŽ¬ Five Years of Creative Mental Health Forums - the short film collection šŸŽ‰

There is an extraordinary groundswell around Creative Health and Healing Arts happening internationally right now. It is exciting to see major organisations, institutions and health leaders recognising the contribution that arts, creativity, culture and connection can make to health and wellbeing.

As we welcome this growing recognition, I also want to remember the roots.

For the past five years, a community of artists, Creative and Experiential Therapists, educators, practitioners and community members has gathered here on BoonWurrung Country in the small coastal town of Inverloch in Gippsland, in the far South East of regional Australia, two hours drive away from any major city, for the Creative Mental Health Forum.

We had no institutional affiliation. No major funding body. No organisation underwriting the work.

The Forums were independently initiated, peer-led and crowd-funded — made possible because people believed enough in the value of gathering together to contribute their time, knowledge, creativity, labour, money and care.

Many of the people who were part of these gatherings have been working in what we now increasingly call the field of ā€˜Creative Health’ for decades.

We have developed practices, created programs, supported communities, generated knowledge, written, researched, taught, advocated and kept going through times when this work attracted considerably less recognition — and sometimes considerable resistance from established ideas about what constitutes health, evidence, knowledge and legitimate practice.

These roots are important.

New fields do not suddenly appear when institutions begin to recognise them. They grow through the accumulated work of people and communities who have been cultivating them, often quietly and persistently, for many years.

Our Creative Mental Health Forums have been one such small part of that much larger story.

I have now brought together the short films created across all five Forums, from 2021–2025, on one webpage.

Together they form an archive of a community and a field in motion: five years of gathering, experimenting, creating, sharing practice, making knowledge, building relationships and imagining possibilities for mental health and wellbeing.

I’m very happy to make this collection publicly available now, as Creative Health enters this new era of visibility and possibility.

May we embrace what is emerging while remembering and honouring the many people, practices and communities whose persistent work made the ground fertile.

And may we continue to ensure that Creative Health remains connected to its grassroots: to artists and practitioners, lived experience, communities, culture, relationship, creativity and collective care.

My Approach to 'Super'

My supervision approach integrates strengths-based, narrative, creative, experiential, and embodied ways of working.

Supervision centers on presence, ethics, embodied wisdom, and care. It emphasizes genuine engagement and moral responsibility over specific methods.

Our work together may include reflection, art-making, dialogue, and/or mindfulness — all in service of strengthening your capacity to be fully alive and responsive in your professional life.

The supervision space is confidential, compassionate, and creative.

New members are always welcome!

Please book yourself in if you’ve been before, or contact me [email protected] to join as a new member.

ā€œSupervision with me is a creative, reflective partnership — a space to pause, make meaning, and stay connected to the life of your work. I bring more than thirty years of experience as an Artist, Creative Arts Therapist, Registered Clinical Counsellor, Supervisor, Educator, and Researcher, grounded in a profound trust in the intelligence of process — through which image, story, and embodied wisdom unveil the rich spectrum of colours, sounds, and feelings that words often only hint at or can scarcely contain.ā€

ā€œButterfly bloomsā€
Oil on canvas.
40x50cm

A whimsical piece painted in March this year, out in the garden, during the daily Creative Flow Open Studio sessions that I’ve been hosting online every weekday from 9.30-10am.

Today was Creative Flow session 103!

I have personally shown up 100% of the time to this beautifully rewarding practice.

And guess what? I’ve had others join me on 95 of those days!

That’s an attendance rate of 92.2% I’m no mathematician or statistician but that number makes me feel good!

It tells me that something valuable is happening for others as well as me.

I love the practice and I’m so happy to share it every weekday morning with those who pop in online.

If you’d like a little company, motivation and regularity to help support you in making space for half an hour of creative practice in your day, or week, or month, you are always welcome to join.

It’s easy, just head to my website.

Next week, instead of joining from my garden or studio, I’ll be hosting from a yacht in the Whitsundays. So if you’d like join me you’ll be treated to some magical views as a little bonus.

See you soon for Creative Flow!

Art is a way of knowing.

Creative field-shaping is itself a creative practice. Art as knowing provides an epistemological foundation for how professions can be cultivated.

This idea sits at the heart of a chapter that Tara Harriden and I have co-authored for this wonderful new forthcoming Routledge book ā€œHealing, Arts and Indigenous Entanglementsā€.

Our chapter explores creativity as an epistemology—a way of generating knowledge through embodied experience, relationship, imagination and shared meaning-making. We consider what becomes possible when these ways of knowing inform the development of a profession.

Using the formation of PACFA’s College of Creative and Experiential Therapies (CCET) as a practice example, we describe a collaborative inquiry involving around 50 creative therapies practitioners from across Australia. Together, we investigated and unearthed the capabilities that support ethical and competent Creative and Experiential Therapeutic practice, creating a framework that grew from practitioners’ experience, dialogue and creative inquiry.

From this work emerged the idea of creative field-shaping. We suggest that the ways we gather, listen, inquire and create together influence the professional cultures we cultivate. Standards become more than governance documents. They become expressions of values, relationships and shared purpose.

For us, this chapter extends a conversation about creativity into professional life. It offers one example of how creative processes can contribute to the development of professions, communities and the conditions in which people can flourish. Our chapter is titled:

Art as Knowing:
Creative Decolonisation and Field-Shaping as Healing Practice

It is due for publication this December, we are thrilled to be contributing to this important book along with the other wonderful authors - we can’t wait to read it ourselves, and share it with you.

We are grateful to the editors Kathryn Grushka, Shelley Hannigan and Elizabeth Cameron for all their work and support in bringing this important book to fruition.

Supervision Studio is on this Friday from 12.30-3pm AEST

and every second Friday.

AND fortnightly on Sundays 10am-12.30pm AEST

Supervision Studio is a small group, creative approach to supervision that centres embodied practice, creative process and arts as knowing.

In every session, I guide you through a mindful creative process that leads into some experiential art making.

The intention is a held space, supportive of deepening your reflective practice, accessing your own creative insights, connecting with the collective wisdom of the group, and experiencing some care for yourself.

This Friday, I’ll be inviting us to connect with colour in a number of ways, starting with our senses, moving into emotions and maybe finding stories that can make their way into our practices.

New members are always welcome.

If you’ve been before you know how to book yourself in.

Supervision Studio is on again this Sunday.

There are a few places available and I would love to welcome you in if you’re in need of a bit of creative, reflective care.

The network of people who access the Supervision Studio is diverse, and people gather in the space from all over Australia. It runs very regularly, once every two weeks, and each group is capped at six participants.

Members are free to join as frequently as they need to, with no pressure. The Studio remains a steady presence and will be there when it is needed. Over time, it becomes familiar — not because the content of sessions repeat, but because intention is held in a consistent way.

I facilitate with a sense of reverence for the work practitioners carry. My role is to hold with care, providing a container for connection and creative process, tracking safety, regulating pace, and supporting meaning to form without being rushed.

Sessions begin with a shared and guided experiential arrival. From there, I offer creative processes for participants to follow threads connected to their work. I always ensure there is plenty of time for individual art making, as this is a form of inquiry, and I want to ensure each member has time to connect with their own creative flow. We share as a group, and there are opportunities for witnessing, being seen, and both giving and receiving creative responses.

Insights and understandings develop relationally, through allowing what is present to surface, take form, and be shared.

New members are always welcome.
