This month at Ipswich Libraries Storytime sessions with Hello Friend Speech, not only are we exploring the ocean, we are sharing ways to support language development at home by exploring nouns.

Why are nouns important?
βœ… Nouns are often a child's first words
βœ… A big noun vocabulary is linked to stronger future language skills
βœ… Nouns form the building blocks of sentences
βœ… Knowing more nouns helps children understand and talk about the world around them

How can you help expand your child's noun knowledge?
πŸ’‘ Name everything you see throughout the day
πŸ’‘ Be specific – instead of "bird", try "cockatoo" or "magpie"
πŸ’‘ Point out and label different parts (e.g. car - wheels, doors)
πŸ’‘ Follow your child's interests

This month at Ipswich Libraries Storytime, we are sharing ways to support speech sound development at home.

Children learn sounds by hearing, watching, and copying others.
Parent tip: Be face-to-face, slow down, and model words clearly

✨ Language Play or Sound Play - Which Group is Right?✨

πŸ—£ Language Play focuses on building your child’s understanding and use of words. We explore vocabulary themes through books, songs and guided play to support early language skills like learning new words, putting words together and expressing ideas.

πŸ”€ Sound Play focuses on speech sound development. Each week we target specific sounds through fun themed activities, helping children hear, practise and become more confident using speech sounds in everyday words.

Both groups:
βœ” Are designed for children aged 18 months–4 years
βœ” Use evidence-informed, play-based learning

If you’re unsure which group would best suit your child, feel free to reach out β€” We’re always happy to guide you πŸ’›
