Ipswich Hospice was built by the community for the community and offers quality end-of-life and palliative respite care in our 7-bed home-like facility. Since 1995, Ipswich Hospice has provided high-quality palliative care for terminally ill people, their families and bereaved people in our community. We create personalised end-of-life care and bereavement support in a nurturing, home-like environ

Services include one-to-one support, adult and children's groups, and community education. As a registered charitable organisation, we are proudly community owned and managed, serving the Ipswich and West Moreton region in South East Queensland. Warren Martens was awarded with the 3rd Life Membership at Ipswich Hospice earlier this year, for his dedication and commitment over many years.

His connection with Ipswich Hospice Care began when he was asked to pledge support during its initial construction. At the time, Warren was still working, but he knew that when he retired, he wanted to dedicate his time to helping in a hands-on way. In 1998, Warren officially joined as a volunteer in the Guest Wing, where his role initially involved practical tasks like making beds, collecting linen, and transporting guests.

Over the years, the role at Ipswich Hospice Care has evolved significantly. In the early days, he was involved in a lot of hands-on workโ€”collecting medical supplies, laundering linen and assisting with day-to-day tasks in the Guest Wing. As time passed, Warren began to focus more on patient interaction, offering a listening ear and quiet companionship to those in need.

Some of the most memorable moments at Hospice are the quiet onesโ€”the times Warren has sat with guests, holding their hand or simply being present when words werenโ€™t needed. He has had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful people, and while he wishes it were under different circumstances, he considers it an honour to have been part of their final journey.

"To me, volunteering isnโ€™t about seeking recognitionโ€”itโ€™s about being there when someone needs you. The real reward comes in the simple moments, like when a guest or family member says, โ€œThank you.โ€ Thatโ€™s all the acknowledgment I need. After 47 years in the paid workforce, I can honestly say this is the best job Iโ€™ve ever had. "

Thank you, Warren. We hope that after 28 years of volunteering at Ipswich Hospice, that you can enjoy your second retirement.
