JHC midwives fundraise for Red Nose Day

Every day in Australia nine babies and children are lost suddenly and unexpectedly to SIDS and stillbirth, among other things. This devastating loss is indescribable.

Red Nose Australia focus on saving little lives, supporting families, and honouring every loss. They fund vital research, provide evidence-based safe sleep and safer pregnancy education, and offer free grief and bereavement support to families following the loss of a pregnancy, baby, or child.

For our midwives, this cause feels particularly close to home. We see every day just how precious those early moments of life are, and we also understand the devastating impact when things don't go as hoped.

Throughout August, our JHC midwives have been raising money for Red Nose Australia. So far, they have raised more than $3500 for this important cause – with more funds raised today, on Red Nose Day via a bake sale.

Today we hosted the Gidget Foundation official opening of Gidget House here at Joondalup Health Campus.

Gidget Foundation Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that exists to support the mental health of families from pre-conception through to early infancy, to ensure they receive accessible, timely and specialised care.

Welcoming Gidget Foundation Australia to Joondalup Health Campus will strengthen the holistic care we provide. The service will ensure parents experiencing perinatal depression and anxiety can access vital support in a familiar and trusted setting.

This is the 48th Gidget House to open in Australia, and the sixth based at a Ramsay Health Care campus.

To access this free service, patients need a GP referral and a mental health plan.

Congratulations to Dr PS Bhowmik, one of our ED consultants, who has been awarded the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) Equity and Inclusion Award for his work in setting up the CREST program at Joondalup Health Campus.

ACEM’s Equity and Inclusion Award recognised practitioners who help embrace diversity, equity and inclusion to help attract and retain a skilled and talented workforce dedicated to excellence – both inside and outside emergency departments.

Dr Bhowmik developed CREST to support International Medical Graduates (IMGs) during their initial transition to the Australasian Health care system. The program focuses on fostering integration into the Joondalup Health Campus community and the Australian healthcare system. It also provides essential knowledge and skills for successful clinical practice in Australia.

Some of JHC’s youngest patients were treated to a special delivery of Fat Cat dolls recently for the filming of an advertisement for the sale of the dolls in support of Telethon.

The limited edition Healthcare Fat Cat dolls are available via the Telethon store or in Coles stores for $30. https://brnw.ch/21x4Z4x

JHC is just one of the many beneficiaries of Telethon, which is in its 59th year.

Yesterday we welcomed Emily Hamilton MLA, Member for Joondalup to our stroke unit, to build awareness for National Stroke Week (3-9 August). Our stroke unit has 30 beds, a bespoke therapy gym and functional training activities.

Our stroke unit treats over 300 patients annually, allowing more northern suburbs patients to be treated and rehabilitated by highly trained stroke specialists closer to home.

To celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, today we handed out gift bags to children in the Telethon Children's ward and Emergency Department. The bags contained a book, boomerang painting kit, bookmarks and fidget toys.

The team were also joined by Cherie Slater, a Badimia Yamatji Wadjuk Noongar woman, who sings songs in language. Cherie also spoke to the children in language, teaching them to count.

Celebrating different cultural days is an important part of showing the community that Joondalup Health Campus is a culturally safe place for all.
