One of the highlights of attending a recent multidisciplinary paediatric conference by the ACCP (Australian College of Chiropractic Paediatrics) was seeing the diverse approaches different health professionals take to supporting children and their families. Although each discipline has its own area of expertise, they all shared a common goal: helping children thrive through evidence-informed, family-centred care.
Here are some of key takeaways and reflections from each profession represented.
Chiropractic Care in Paediatrics
The chiropractic presentation focused on the musculoskeletal system and how movement and function can influence a child's comfort and development. Paediatric chiropractors commonly see babies and children with concerns such as neck preference, feeding difficulties related to positioning, postural issues, and movement asymmetries.
One of my biggest takeaways was the emphasis on gentle, age-appropriate assessment and treatment. The discussion also reinforced the importance of working collaboratively with other healthcare providers rather than in isolation. While research continues to evolve regarding paediatric chiropractic care, communication with families and other professionals remains essential to ensuring children receive comprehensive, evidence-informed care.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists help children develop the skills they need to participate in everyday life. This includes self-care, play, learning, emotional regulation, and social participation.
The presentation explored how occupational therapists support children experiencing sensory processing differences, fine motor challenges, handwriting difficulties, emotional regulation concerns, and developmental delays.
A key message that stood out was that therapy should always be meaningful and child-centred. Rather than simply practising isolated skills, occupational therapists aim to build independence in activities that matter most to each child and family.
Midwifery and Birth
The midwifery session highlighted the incredible role midwives play in supporting women throughout pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period. Their care extends beyond the birth itself, focusing on education, informed decision-making, emotional support, and building confidence for new parents.
The presentation reinforced how a positive birth experience can influence not only maternal wellbeing but also early bonding, breastfeeding, and family adjustment.
As someone interested in children's health, it was valuable to reflect on how a child's journey begins well before birth, making early support for families an important foundation for lifelong health and development.
