When a stroke strikes, be a F.A.S.T. hero. 🧠

It's National Stroke Week (3–9 August). Do you know the signs?
🟡 F — Face: has their face drooped on one side?
🟡 A — Arms: can they raise both arms?
🟡 S — Speech: is their speech slurred?
🟡 T — Time: time is critical. Call 000 immediately.

Call even if the signs pass. Stroke is always a medical emergency.

The person who spots a stroke is almost never a doctor. It's a workmate on the night shift, a partner at the kitchen table, or a mate in the crib room. That's why knowing F.A.S.T. matters. Call 000 straight away — an ambulance can start treatment on the way in.

Share this post. Show it to your crew. Make it a toolbox talk this week.

Physios are a core part of the stroke recovery team – rehabilitation, movement, and helping people get back to life. 💙

It's Tradies' National Health Month — and in Kalgoorlie, we feel this one deeply. 🔨

The APA's 2026 tradie survey found:
→ 68% say their pain shows up most in the back, neck or shoulders
→ Only 10% see a physio regularly to prevent injury, not just patch it up

If you're a tradie, a miner, a truckie, a boilermaker, a sparky, or a plumber — this month is for you.

All August we're posting neck and posture education built specifically for the trades and mining community.

Because your body is your livelihood. And it deserves looking after. 🙏

The most underrated exercise for anyone on their feet all day? 👇
The calf raises. And its companion — the foot dome.

Together, these two exercises build the foundation strength your feet and ankles need to handle 12-hour shifts on hard surfaces, shift after shift, swing after swing.

🏋️ 4 levels of calf raises — from beginner to advanced
🦶 Foot doming — the intrinsic muscle move most people have never heard of
(Hint: toes stay LONG. This is NOT a toe curl.)

Your ankle & foot series graduation exercise. 🎓

Save it. Make it your morning habit. Your feet are the foundation of everything.

Everything starts at the ground.

If your feet aren't right, your ankles, knees, hips, and lower back all eventually pay the price.

We've spent July covering ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles problems – but this week we're wrapping up with the most practical post of the series.

Swipe through for how to actually look after your feet on site: 👉
✅ Boot checklist
✅ When to replace your boots (most people wait too long)
✅ Heat and swelling management on long shifts
✅ When foot pain becomes a safety issue — not just a health issue

Save this one. Share it with your safety rep.
Send it to a mate who's been limping around on site. 📌

Achilles pain creeping in by day 2 of every swing? This is the one to add to your R&R routine.

The eccentric heel drop — simple, but it works.
The secret? It's ALL in the lowering. Slow. Controlled. 3 seconds down. That's where the tendon does the work.

Two versions, do BOTH:
1️⃣ Straight knee — targets the gastrocnemius (upper calf)
2️⃣ Bent knee ~20° — targets the soleus (deeper calf)

🔄 FIFO WORKERS: do this on your R&R days. Prepare your Achilles for the load spike when you're back on site. 5 minutes morning and evening. It takes about 12 weeks — but week 1 starts today.

⚠️ Pain right AT the heel bone? Don't drop below the step — stop at neutral, and if you're not sure which type of pain you've got, that's exactly what we're here for.

3 sets of 15. Twice daily. Both legs. Save this. 📌

Here's a pattern our physios see constantly in Kalgoorlie's mining community:
🔄 14 days on site — 12-hour shifts, heavy boots, constant movement
😴 7 days off — rest, recover, barely walk
🔄 Back on site — and the Achilles SCREAMS by day 2.

Sound familiar?
This is the FIFO load – and it's one of the most predictable injury patterns we see.

Swipe through for why your Achilles tendon suffers specifically in a swing roster, the difference between the two types of Achilles pain (they're treated differently!), and what to do about it during your R&R so you're not in pain by the end of your first week back on site. 👉

Part 3 of our Ankle & Foot series.
The exercise to prep your Achilles before your next swing drops Friday. 📌

Do this BEFORE your boots go on each morning. 🥾

Two simple exercises that take less than 5 minutes – and they can make a real difference to heel pain, especially heading into a 12-hour shift.
1) Plantar fascia stretch — pull your toes back before your first step out of bed. Hold for 30 seconds.
2) Towel scrunches — strengthen the tiny muscles that support your arch
(P.S.: If towel scrunches cramp your foot, that's your body telling you those muscles are weak and need this work! 😅)

Paired with Monday's post on plantar fasciitis — check that out if you missed it. 📌

That first step out of bed in the morning — 🔥 OUCH.

If the bottom of your heel feels like it's on fire every morning, this one's for you.
Plantar fasciitis is the #1 foot complaint we see in our mining community — and it's not hard to see why. 12-hour shifts. Steel-capped boots. Concrete floors. Hard compacted ground.
Your plantar fascia is working overtime — and at some point, it pushes back.

Look through for what's actually happening, why your boots matter more than you think, and a quick self-check to see if this sounds like you. 👉

Part 2 of our Ankle & Foot series. The stretch to ease it drops this Friday — save this one for now. 📌
