What does "Category 1, 2, 3" mean on my referral?
If your referral letter, or a hospital waiting list, mentions a "Category," this explains exactly what that means, how long each category is supposed to take, and how to check the real, current data for your state. This is general information, not advice about your individual case — for your own specific timeframe, contact your GP, specialist, or the hospital directly.

Plain-English, source-cited guide to referral urgency categories — outpatient clinics, surgery waitlists, and private specialists, state by state.

Important Update: Big Changes to Free Pneumococcal (Pneumonia) Protection in Australia!

From 1 July 2026, the Australian Department of Health has completely updated the National Immunisation Program (NIP) to make protecting yourself against pneumococcal disease simpler and more accessible.

What is changing?
Instead of the old schedule that required multiple visits and two different types of vaccines, there is now a new, single-dose vaccine available called Capvaxive (21vPCV). It’s a true "one and done" approach—offering broad protection with just a single dose at a single visit!

The eligibility age for a FREE vaccine has dropped!
Under the new rules, you are eligible for the free vaccine if you are:
🔹 An adult aged 65 and over (down from age 70)
🔹 An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult aged 25 and over (down from age 50)
🔹 An adult aged 18 and over with certain medical risk conditions (including chronic heart, kidney, or lung conditions, diabetes, or a history of smoking)

Pneumococcal bacteria can lead to serious lung, blood, or brain infections, so keeping your immunity up to date is a wonderful step for your long-term health.

Even if you have previously had an older pneumococcal vaccine, your GP can check the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to see if a top-up dose of this new version is recommended for you.

Ready to chat?
The next time you’re visiting us at Brewer Street Medical Centre, just let your doctor know you'd like to check your eligibility. You can even safely receive it at the same time as your routine flu or seasonal immunisations!

Give our lovely reception team a call or book your next routine check-up online. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Managing medication costs? The PBS Safety Net is here to help! 🩺✨

If you or your family need a lot of medicines throughout the year, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) Safety Net helps cap your out-of-pocket costs. Once you spend up to a certain threshold within a calendar year, your PBS medicines will either become cheaper or completely free for the rest of that year.
Keeping track of your scripts is a simple way to protect your healthcare budget.
