Those nights when I wake suddenly at 1am with my mind racing, I no longer lie there tossing and turning 🛌. I don’t want my bedroom to be associated with not sleeping so I don’t fight it, I give into it, but I ensure I do the sleeplessness part in an entirely different room. I pad quietly up the stairs, listening for the clip clip of my dog’s little paws on the wooden floors as he follows me to the kitchen. I select the most delicate tea cup I can find, brew a pot 🫖of loose leaf tea designed for sleep, and whilst it brews, I slip into the study and select a book 📕 from the pile of novels I never quite finish and curl up on the sofa with Tuppy 🐾 until I my head feels heavy, and my mind swims in a soporific haze. These simple little rituals lower my cortisol, allowing my overactive brain to calm and feel safe, so in less than 20 minutes, I can quietly pad back downstairs and slip in a precious few extra hours before the day begins.
