A new US study published this week provided further evidence that 0.01% atropine eye drops do NOT effectively slow myopia progression or eye elongation in children.
Key points from study:
Question: Do low-dose atropine, 0.01%, eye drops delivered nightly over 2 years slow the progression of myopia in children aged 5 to 12 years in the US?
Finding: In this randomized clinical trial including 187 children, atropine, 0.01%, eye drops did not slow myopia progression or axial elongation.
This new study and the Hong Kong LAMP study (2018-) confirm that previous conclusions drawn from the older ATOM2 study in Singapore (2016) were in fact flawed. What we know now is that effectiveness of atropine treatment is concentration-dependent and 0.01% is an inadequate dose.
