Let’s Talk About Su***de

The daily toll of su***de in Australia is significant.

💔 Nearly 9 lives are lost to su***de every day.
💔 Around 150 su***de attempts occur each day.
💔 That’s more than 3,000 deaths and around 55,000 attempts every year.
💔 The estimated economic cost of su***de in Australia is $30.5 billion each year.

But behind every statistic is a person — and behind every person are families, friends, colleagues and communities whose lives are forever changed.

Let’s talk about it.

Mental health matters. Su***de prevention matters. And talking openly about su***de can help reduce stigma, increase understanding and create opportunities for people to seek support before they reach crisis point.

We don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes, simply asking “Are you okay?”, listening without judgement and being willing to stay connected can make a difference.

If you’re concerned about someone, start the conversation.
If you’re struggling yourself, please reach out. You don’t have to face it alone.

Let’s keep talking.
Let’s keep listening.
Let’s keep learning.
And most importantly, let’s keep looking out for one another. 💙

📖 The Ripples: What Lies Beyond explores the profound impact that su***de can have — not only on the individual, but on everyone left behind.

When Experience Meets Evidence

What makes clinical hypnotherapy truly powerful?

It’s not just the hypnosis. It’s the knowledge, experience and clinical understanding behind how it is used.

At Danielle Aitken – Clinical Hypnotherapy & Counselling, I bring decades of experience across health, counselling and clinical practice into every session.

My professional background includes:

✨ Registered Nurse & Registered Midwife
✨ 20 years in IVF & women’s health
✨ 15 years as a counsellor
✨ Diploma & Advanced Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy
✨ Diploma in NLP
✨ Certified HeartMath® Practitioner
✨ Postgraduate Certification in Practical Genetics
✨ Ongoing postgraduate study in Neuroscience & Mental Health

This breadth of experience allows me to look beyond a single symptom and consider the whole person : mind, brain, body, emotions and life experiences.

My approach is evidence-informed, compassionate and individualised, drawing on neuroscience, neuroplasticity, psychology, counselling and clinical hypnosis.

And importantly, evidence matters.

Research continues to explore how hypnosis influences brain activity and its potential clinical applications, including pain management and medical procedures.

Evidence-informed practice also means recognising what the research does, and does not, show. Hypnotherapy isn’t a magic cure. Good clinical practice means knowing when it may be helpful, when another approach may be more appropriate, and when referral or collaboration is needed.

This is what makes a difference.

Not simply doing hypnosis, but understanding why, when and how to use it therapeutically.

🌿 Heal deeply. Transform fully. Live freely.

I’m currently enjoying expanding my knowledge in the neuroscience of mental health, continuing my journey as a lifelong learner and exploring the ever-evolving science that helps us better understand the human mind.

The more we understand neurobiology of the brain, and the mind–body connection, the more we can appreciate just how interconnected our thoughts, emotions, behaviours and physical wellbeing truly are.

For me, this learning isn’t simply about gaining knowledge, it’s about continually refining my practice so I can better support the people I work with.

This fascinating connection between mind and body sits at the heart of what we explore in hypnotherapy: creating fast, effective, positive change by working with the mind at a deeper level.

Where the mind goes, the body follows.

And the more we understand the science behind that connection, the more powerful our opportunities for meaningful change become. ✨

As I sit here on a beautiful Sunday afternoon doing some study, working through a module on Understanding and Preventing Su***de, I’m reminded of a heartbreaking reality…..

EVERY day in Australia, NINE people lose their lives to su***de, and around 150 more attempt to take their own life.

That’s more than 3,000 Australians every year.

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, friends, colleagues, and a community whose lives are changed forever.

The ripple effects of su***de extend far beyond one tragic loss.

If you’re struggling right now, please know this:

💙 It’s okay not to be okay.
💙 This moment will pass.
💙 You don’t have to face it alone.
💙 Help is available.
💙 One day at a time
💙 Please stay one more day
💙 Your life matters

Please reach out. Talk to someone you trust. One conversation, one message, or one phone call can make all the difference.

Together, let’s continue to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage compassion, and remind one another that every life matters.

Devastating!
How many more?

How many more lives have to be shattered?
How many more children have to lose their innocence?
How many more families have to live with unimaginable grief?

Today, my heart aches for two little boys whose world has been irreparably changed forever.

The impacts of domestic and family violence don’t stop when the screaming does. It spreads through generations leaving trauma where there should have been love, fear where there should have been safety, and heartbreak that words can never truly describe.

This is not just someone else’s problem.

It is our problem.
It is a community problem.
It is a national problem.

We need to do more than react after another tragedy.

We need to educate.

We need to intervene earlier.

We need to support victims.

Mostly, We absolutely need to hold perpetrators accountable.

We need to teach our children that respect, empathy and kindness are the foundations of every healthy relationship.

Because every child deserves to grow up feeling safe.

Every woman deserves to live without fear.

Every person deserves to come home without wondering if today will be the day their life changes forever.

This has to stop.

No more excuses.
No more turning away.
No more accepting the unacceptable.

Enough.

💔 My thoughts are with every child, every family, every survivor, and everyone whose life has been forever changed by domestic and family violence.

If you can help these two little boys please donate 🙏

Life is too short to suffer.

Sometimes we become so focused on what’s going wrong that we forget to notice what’s going right.

Today, try this: Pause for a moment and ask yourself:
✨ What worked for me today?
💚 What am I grateful for?
🌼 What’s good in my life right now?

What you focus on you strengthen.

By choosing to notice the good, you begin to reshape your thoughts, your emotions, and ultimately your outcomes.

Small moments of gratitude can create powerful shifts in mindset. Start today. Your future self will thank you.

Change your thoughts.
Change your focus.
Change your outcomes.

Did you know your heart has its own intrinsic neural network?

Often called the “the little brain in the heart,” this remarkable network of around 40,000 specialised neurons (brain cells) can sense, process information, learn, remember, and communicate independently with the brain. Rather than simply responding to instructions from the brain, the heart is in constant two-way communication with it, influencing our emotions, perception, decision-making, and overall wellbeing.

When the heart and brain are working together in harmony, we experience what is known as heart–brain coherence. This state is associated with a more balanced nervous system, improved emotional regulation, greater mental clarity, and enhanced resilience to stress.

Research into regular heart coherence practice has demonstrated significant benefits, including:

❤️ Up to 46% reduction in anxiety
❤️ Up to 56% reduction in symptoms of depression
❤️ Up to 49% improvement in sleep difficulties and insomnia
❤️ Reduced stress and emotional distress
❤️ Improved focus, cognitive performance and decision-making
❤️ Increased resilience and emotional self-regulation
❤️ Enhanced heart rate variability (HRV), an important marker of health and adaptability

Even practising for 5–15 minutes a day can help shift your nervous system from survival mode into a calmer, more regulated state.

As both neuroscience and psychophysiology continue to evolve, we’re learning that healing isn’t just about changing our thoughts—it’s also about changing the physiological conversation between the heart and the brain.

Sometimes the most profound transformation begins by listening to the wisdom of the heart.

Trauma-informed hypnotherapy isn’t a trend—it’s a clinical approach that demands skill, safety, and ethical practice, and this piece on Trauma Informed Hypnotherapy Practice in Australia breaks down what that means in everyday work. As the peak industry body, the Australian Hypnotherapists Association (AHA) supports practitioners with professional standards, supervision, and knowledge sharing through our member community and social channels. If you’re pursuing recognised pathways, maintaining registration readiness, or building referral confidence, the AHA’s peer groups and practitioner community are there to help you stay current and accountable. For clinicians and graduates alike, this article is a grounded, advocacy-driven guide that strengthens your practice and your professional standing with the AHA at the centre.

Hypnosis can be effective, but the real question for Australian practitioners and clients is safety—and that’s exactly what our members are discussing in “Is Hypnosis Safe? What Australians Should Know.” The Australian Hypnotherapists Association (AHA) looks at evidence-informed practice, ethical safeguards, and what “safe” should mean in real clinical settings, not just in theory. If you’re seeking recognised training pathways, registration-ready standards, or ongoing peer support, the AHA’s professional supervision culture and practitioner community are there to help you stay aligned. For both clinicians and the public, our knowledge sharing and trusted national directory support confidence in who’s qualified and how practice should be delivered.
