π Understanding Stomas & Pelvic Floor Health π
For some people undergoing bowel cancer surgery, it may be necessary for the surgeon to create an opening on the abdomen called a stoma. This allows waste to leave the body safely while the bowel heals or, in some cases, permanently.
A stoma may be:
βͺοΈ Temporary β allowing the bowel time to recover after surgery
βͺοΈ Permanent β depending on the location of the tumour and the surgery required
There are different types of stomas, and every personβs experience is unique.
When a temporary stoma is reversed, some people may experience:
β’ Bowel urgency
β’ Bowel leakage
β’ Difficulty controlling bowel motions
β’ Changes in bowel habits
Pelvic floor exercises and guidance from a Continence and Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist can often assist in improving bowel control, confidence and quality of life during recovery.
At Complete Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy, we understand these conversations can feel sensitive and overwhelming. Support, education and individualised care can make a significant difference during recovery and rehabilitation. π
