When you come into see me we talk about the reason you have come in and then we go through all the different systems of the body because they interact and effect each other. We also talk about your diet and I do physicals e.g pulse, blood pressure, iridology

and whatever else I deem to be relevant to your case. This Week (7th-11th September) is: Women's Health Week!

This year’s theme, ‘Do it anyway’, is about taking small steps for your health, on your terms. It’s not about pushing through pain or pressure. It’s about giving yourself permission to prioritise your health, whether that means seeking support, asking another question, taking time to rest or doing what feels right for you.

Day 1: To Fuel. Does eating well ever feel too expensive, too time-consuming or too hard to get right? Nourish your body: healthy eating isn't about perfection.

Calcium is the main building block of your bones. It keeps your skeleton strong. Up until the age of 50 (or until menopause), women need 1,000 mg of calcium per day. After the age of 50 (or after menopause), calcium needs increase to 1,300 mg per day. Good sources of calcium include dairy foods (like cheese, milk and yoghurt) as well as tinned salmon and sardines (with the bones in). It is also found in lesser amounts in broccoli, beans and almonds.

Iron helps to keep your energy levels up, your immune system healthy and your cells supplied with oxygen. Good sources of iron include red meat, chicken and fish. It’s also found in plant (vegetarian) foods such as spinach, lentils, beans, nuts and seeds. To improve how much iron you absorb from plant foods, eat them alongside vitamin C-rich foods, such as capsicum, tomato and citrus fruits. Iron is important for everyone, but if you have periods – in particular, heavy periods – you need more iron than other people. Being pregnant also increases your iron needs.

Magnesium is needed for healthy muscles and nerves. It also helps with blood pressure and bone health.Women need around 320 mg of magnesium per day. In pregnancy, this increases to 360 mg per day. Foods high in magnesium include green leafy vegetables (like spinach and kale), nuts, seeds and wholegrains, as well as legumes (like peas, beans and chickpeas). As an example, 30 g each of pumpkin seeds, chia seeds and almonds will provide around 347 mg of magnesium.

Protein is a powerhouse nutrient that helps to build muscle, hormones and healthy brain chemicals (neurotransmitters). Good sources of protein include meat and fish, dairy products, nuts, seeds, legumes and soy products. How much daily protein you need is different from person to person. As a general rule, at each meal aim to eat a portion of protein that’s roughly the size and thickness of the palm of your hand. For vegetarian sources of protein such as beans or tofu, double this to 2 palms. Be aware that you’ll need more protein than other women if you’re very physically active, pregnant, breastfeeding, aged 70 or older or have a high body weight.

Vitamin B is not a single nutrient. It’s actually a collection of 8 nutrients – there’s vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9 and B12. Together they’re called ‘the B-group vitamins’ or as a supplement ‘vitamin B complex’. The B-group vitamins are team players. They work together and even help each other get absorbed by the body. Vitamins B5 and B6, for example, are both involved in making energy from the food you eat. Vitamin B9 (also known as folate) works closely with vitamin B12 to build cells. It also depends on vitamin B12 for absorption. The B-group vitamins often occur together in the same food. Many of them are found in protein foods such as chicken, fish, meat and dairy products. Others are found in wholewheat bread, green leafy vegetables and nuts. Each vitamin in the group has an important part to play for your health. Body System of the Day!

Skeletal system: bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons.

Functions: support-soft tissue and provides attachment points for tendons of most skeletal muscles. Protection-protects the most important internal organs from injury. E.g. cranial bones protect the brain, veretebrae protect the spinal cord, rib cage protects the lungs and heart. Assistance in movement-most skeletal muscles attach to bones, when they contract they pull on bones to produce movement. Mineral homeostatis (storage and release)-bone tissue stores several minerals especially calcium and phosphorus which contributes to the strength of bone. Bone stores about 99% of the body's calcium. Blood cell production-within certain bones a certain tissue called red bone marrow produces red blood cells, white bloods cells, platelets. It is present in developing bones of the fetus and in some adult bones=hip (pelvic) bones, ribs, sternum (breastbone), vertebrae (backbones), skull and the ends of the bones of the humerus (arm bone) and femur (thigh bone). In a newborn, all bone marrow is red with increasing age much of the bone marrow changes from red to yellow. Triglyceride storage-yellow bone marrow consists mainly of adipose cells, which are triglycerides.

Structure: diaphysis: bones shaft or body-long cylindrical, main portion of the bone. Epiphyses: proximal and distal ends of the bone. Metaphyses: regions between the diaphysis and the epiphyses. Articular cartilage: think layer of hyaline cartilage covering the part of the epiphysis where the bone forms an articulation (joint) with another bone. It reduces friction and absorbs shock at freely moveable joints. Periosteum: tough connective tissue sheath. Protects the bone, assists in fracture repair, helps nourish one tissue and serves as an attachment point for ligaments and tendons. Medullary/Marrow cavity: hollow, cylindrical space within the diaphysis that contains fatty yellow bone marrow and numerous blood vessels in adults. Endosteum: thin membrane that lines the medullary cavity.

The adult human skeleton consists of 206 bones, most of which are paired. The skeletons of infants and children have more then 206 bones because some of their bones (sacrum and coccyx) fuse later in life. Bones of the adult skeleton are grouped into 2 principal divisions: axial skeleton (80 bones), appendicular skelton (126).

Skull: bony framework of the head. It contains 22 bones. They are grouped into 2 categories: cranial bones: form the cranial cavity that protects the brain. The 8 cranial bones: frontal bone (forms the forehead, roofs of the orbits-eye sockets and most of the anterior par of the cranial floor), 2 parietal bones, 2 temporal bones (form the inferior lateral aspects of the cranium and part of the cranial floor), occipital bone (forms the posterior part and most of the base of the cranium), sphenoid bone (lies in the middle part at the base of the skull) and ethmoid bone (delicate bone located in the anterior part of the cranial form medial to the floor and is sponge like in appearance). facial bones: 14 form the face. 2 nasal bones (small, flattened, retangualr shaped bones that form the bridge of the nose. For those who wear glasses they are the bones that form the resting place for the bridge of the glasses), 2 maxillae (unite to form the upper jawbone), 2 zygomatic bones (commonly called checkbones), mandible (lower jaw bone. Largest, strongest facial bone. Only moveable jaw bone), 2 lacrimal bones (thin and roughly resemble a fingernail in size and shape. They are the smallest bones of the face), 2 palatine ones (L shaped. Form the posterior portion of the hard palate part of the floor and lateral wall of the nasal cavity and a small portion of the floors of the orbits), 2 inferior nasal conchae (inferior to the middle nasal conchae of the ethmoid bone, separate bones, not pat of the ethomoid bone), vomer (roughly triangular bone on the floor of the nasal cavity).

Single shaped hyoid bone (U shaped): suspended from the styloid processes of the temporal bones by ligaments and muscles. Supports the tongue.

Vertebral column, spine, backbone, spinal column: makes about 2/5ths of your total height. Composed of a series of bones: vertebrae. The vertebral column, the sternum and the ribs form the skeleton of the trunk of the body. The vertebral column consists of bone and connective tissue, the spinal cord that it surrounds and protects consists of nervous and connective tissue. At about 71cm (28 inches) in an average adult male and about 61cm (24 inches) in an average adult female, the vertebral column functions as a strong, flexible rod with elements that can move forward, backward, sideways and rotate. As well as enclosing and protecting the spinal cord, it supports the head and serves as a point of attachment for the ribs, pelvic girdle and muscles of the back and upper limbs. The total number of vertebrae during early development is 33. As a cihld grows, several vertebrae in the sacral and coccygeal regions fuse. As a result, the adult vertebral column typically contains 26 vertebrae. 7 cervical vertebrae (C1-C7) are in the neck region (moveable). 12 thoracic vertebrae (T1-T12) are posterior to the thoracic cavity. 5 lumbar vertebrae (L1-L5) support the back (moveable). 1 sacrum consists of 5 fused sacral vertebrae S1-S5 (not moveable). 1 coccyx usually consists of 4 fused cocygeal vertebrae Co1-Co4 (not moveable).

Sternum/Breastbone: flat, narrow bone located in the centre of the anterior thoracic wall. Consists of 3 parts. Manubrium: superior part. Body: middle and largest part. Xiphoid process: inferior and smallest part.

13 pairs of ribs. Increase in length from 1st-7th and decrease in length to the 12 rib.

Pectoral (shoulder) girdle: x2. each consists of a clavicle (s shaped) and scapula/shoulder blade.

Upper limb: extremity. 30 bones in 3 locations. Humerus: arm bone: longest and largest bone of the upper limb. Ulna (located on the medial aspect-little finger side of the forearm and is longer then the radius) and Radius: smaller bone of the forearm located on the lateral aspect (thumb side) of the forearm. 8 carpals in the carpus (wrist). 5 metacarpals in the metacarpus (palm). 14 phalanges (bones of the digits) in the hand.

Pelvic (Hip) girdle: consist of 2 hip bones, also called coxal or pelvic bones. Each of the 2 hip bones consist of 3 bones separated by cartilage: a superior ilium (largest), an inferior and anterior p***s and an inferior and posterior ischium.

Lower limb (extremity): 30 bones in 4 locations. Femur/thigh bone (longest, heaviest, strongest bone in the body). Patella (kneecap): small, triangular bone located anterior to the knee joint. Tibia/shin bone (larger, medial, weight bearing bone of the leg) and Fibula (parallel and lateral to the tibia, but considerably smaller) in the leg. 7 tarsals in the tarsus (ankle), 5 metatarsals in the metatarsus and the 14 phalanges (bones of the digits) in the foot. Body System of the Day!

Integumentary System: composed of the skin, hair, oil and sweat glands, nails and sensory receptors.

Functions: helps maintain a constant body temperature, protects the body and provides sensory information about the surrounding environment.

Dermatology: medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of integumentary system disorders.

The skin, also known as the cutaneous membrane covers the external surface of the body is the largest organ of the body in both surface area and weight. In adults, the skin covers an area of about 2 square meteres (22 square feet). It ranges in thickness form 0.5mm on the eyelids to 4.0mm on the heels. Over most of the body it is 1-2mm thick. The skin consists of 2 main parts. The superficial, thinner portion, which is composed of epithelial tissue, is the epidermis. The deeper, thicker connective tissue part is the dermis. Epidermis=avascular, dermis=vascular. If you cut the epidermis there is no bleeding, but if you cut the dermis there is bleeding.

Melanin, haemoglobin and carotene are 3 pigments that impart a wide variety of colour to the skin. The amount of melanin causes the skins colour to vary. The difference between the 2 forms of melanin, phenomelanin (yellow to red) and eumelanin (brown to black) is most apparent in the hair. Dark skinned individuals have large amounts of melanin in the epidermis, light skinned individuals have little melanin in the epidermis. Carotene: yellow-orange pigment that gives egg yolks and carrots their colour. It's a precursor of vitamin A, used to synthesise pigments needed for vision, it's stored in the stratum corneum and fatty areas of the dermis and subcutaneous layer in response to excessive dietary intake. In fact, so much carotene might be deposited in the skin after eating large amounts of carotene rich foods that the skin actually turns orange. Decreasing carotene intake eliminates the problem.

Hairs or pili are present on most skin surfaces except for the palms, palmer surfaces of the fingers, the soles and the plantar surfaces of the feet. Genetic and hormonal influences largely determine the thickness and the pattern of hair distribution. Hair on the head guards the scalp from injury and the suns rays. As well as decreasing heat loss from the scalp. Eyebrows and eyelashes protect the eyes from foreign particles, similar to the way the hair in the nostrils and in the external ear canal defends those structures. Shaft: superficial portion of the hair, which projects above the surface of the skin. Root: portion of the hair deep to the shaft that penetrates into the dermis and sometimes into the subcutaneous layer. Each hair follicle goes through a growth cycle. Growth stage: cells of the hair matrix divide. As new cells from the hair matrix are added to the base of the hair root, existing cells of the hair root are pushed upward and the hair grows longer. Regression stage: when the cells of the hair matrix stop dividing the hair follicle atrophies (shrinks) and the hair stops growing. Resting stage. After that a new cycle begins. Scalp hair is in the growth stage for 2-6 years. Regression stage 2-3 weeks.Resting stage about 3 months. At any time, about 85% of scalp hairs are in the growth stage. Normal hair loss in the adult scalp is about 70-100 hairs per day.

Nail body (plate): visible part of the nail. Most of the nail body appears pink because of the blood flowing through the capillaries in the underlying dermis. Free edge: part of the nail body that might extend past the distal end of the digit, it's white because there are no underlying capillaries. Nail root: portion of the nail that's buried in a fold of skin. The whitish, crescent shaped are of the proximal end of the nail body is called: lunula.
