Newcastle Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Clinic Dr James O'Sullivan is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery. In 1989 Dr O’Sullivan graduated from Sydney University.

Dr O’Sullivan has been treating patients in private practice in Lambton since 1998. He specialises in Foot and Ankle Surgery with a keen interest in management of the diabetic foot, treatment of bone and joint deformity and trauma. He was on rotation from Royal Newcastle Hospital where he completed 8 years of Orthopaedic training. Dr O’Sullivan then completed his Fellowship year in Dublin in Paedi

He was a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, on call for trauma, for 10 years up until 2008 and he continues to further his knowledge in his field of interest with attendance and participation at conferences both here and overseas. Residual clubfoot or Talipes equinovarus as it is known surgically can cause serious problems in adulthood.
Deformity such as this cause painful callus, excessive shoe wear & painful arthritis.
The surgical salvage of this condition is hind foot fusion to correct deformity & overcome arthritis.

Tumours of the foot are common. The vast majority are benign but still cause problems with shoe wear & sports.
This mucoid cyst was located on the dorsum of the big toe & came to excision biopsy to avoid pressure from shoes & to determine the histopathology.
About 10% of cysts & ganglia recur.

Therefore, more surgery might be need after the fractures have healed.

Osteochondral defects of the talar dome can be crippling & difficult to treat as they damage the weight bearing surface of the ankle joint.
Treatment options include activity modification, anti inflammatory medication, injectables or surgery to try to heal the cartilage & bone.
If these lesions progress they lead to ankle arthritis.

Below knee, amputation is generally considered a disastrous outcome for a patient. But for pathology that is dead, dangerous or just a ‘damned’ nuisance, it can be a godsend.
Patients can return to meaningful & pain-free activities of daily living, work & physical activities after a period of rehabilitation.
New technologies such as Osteointegration are promising improved prosthetics & patient outcomes.

Symptomatic ankle arthritis above a hind foot fusion is always difficult to manage.
The two surgical options include ankle replacement or fusion but both can have unpredictable outcomes.
With this man (77), I have pushed him to persevere with non operative treatment including analgesics, activity modification and weight reduction.
