Some days, life feels manageable.

Other days, even the smallest things can feel like too much.

If that sounds familiar, you are not alone.

Our June blog explores the Window of Tolerance, a helpful way to understand how your nervous system responds to stress, and why you might sometimes feel calm and capable, and at other times overwhelmed or shut down.

It also shares simple ways to support regulation and return to a sense of balance.

National Reconciliation Week 2026

This National Reconciliation Week, we recognise the importance of learning from our shared histories, listening with respect, and taking meaningful action towards reconciliation.

The 2026 theme, All In, reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility. It calls on each of us to move beyond words and commit to actions that support respect, truth-telling, justice, and stronger relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

At Synapse Psychology, we acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live and work, and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. We recognise the strength, resilience, cultures, and continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country, community, and identity.

As we wrap up our May focus on alcohol and other drugs, we’re looking ahead to Dry July.

In this video, Synapse Psychology psychologist Tom explains why relying on willpower alone can make change harder, and how approaches like CBT and the stimulus-response model can help us better understand the habits, triggers and patterns behind alcohol use.

Dry July can be more than a month without alcohol. It can be a chance to reflect, understand your “why”, and make choices that feel more sustainable.

Read Tom’s blog on understanding alcohol and other drug use, via the Synapse website.

Today is National Sorry Day.

Today, we pause to acknowledge the strength, resilience, and lived experiences of Stolen Generations survivors, their families, and their communities.

National Sorry Day is observed each year on 26 May and marks the anniversary of the tabling of the Bringing Them Home report in 1997. It is a day to remember the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families, communities, culture, and Country, and to reflect on the ongoing impact of this trauma.

It is also a day for listening, learning, truth-telling, and meaningful action. Nearly 30 years on, The Healing Foundation notes that many recommendations from the Bringing Them Home report remain unfinished, and many survivors are still waiting for the support, records, redress, and healing they deserve.

Today, and every day, we honour Stolen Generations survivors and stand with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the ongoing journey toward truth, healing, justice, and reconciliation.

Have you noticed more young people va**ng?
If you’ve walked through the Brisbane Street Mall or grabbed a coffee in Launceston lately, you’ve likely seen more people are va**ng. The latest data shows that the habit is accelerating fast, especially among our young adults.

What the numbers are telling us:
The National Drug Strategy Household Survey results have highlighted a significant shift in how we use substances in the 18–24 age bracket. In Tasmania, around 15% of young adults are using e-cigarettes. Nearly one in three younger Tasmanians have tried va**ng, often without ever having been a smoker first.

Why do young people use e-cigarettes or vapes?
For many, a daily va**ng habit is a coping mechanism for stress, social pressure, or underlying mental health hurdles.

This is where psychological support changes the game:
While a statistic can tell us how many people are va**ng, a psychologist helps people understand why. People are more than a percentage in a survey. Whether it's looking to cut back on va**ng or quitting altogether, professional help is the most effective tool in your kit.

May 17th is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia. Today marks the removal of homosexuality from the World Health Organisation's Classification of Diseases. Celebrating this milestone day and standing against LGBTQIA+ discriminations is still crucial in 2026 despite the wins towards equality that we've had. Unfortunately, LGBTQIA+ people are still being discriminated against, and q***r people are less likely to be out at work than in 2022. Trans folks across the world are being targeted and seeing their rights restricted. With that in mind, this year's theme, "At the heart of democracy", reminds us that, for true democracy to work, we all need to be heard, respected, included and able to participate safely and equally.

This May 17, go rainbow like our counsellor Marion, proud q***r woman, and show your support to the LGBTQIA+ community.

Alcohol and other drug (AOD) use is often more complex than the substance itself. It can be closely connected to stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, emotional regulation and the brain’s reward system.

Psychology can help people better understand the “why” behind their urges, identify triggers, and build healthier ways to cope. Evidence-based approaches such as CBT, ACT and Motivational Interviewing can support people to make meaningful, values-based change over time.

Recovery is not about willpower alone. It is about understanding the cycle, building support, and learning new ways to move forward.

Mother’s Day is a time to pause and recognise motherhood in all its shapes and forms.

Today we acknowledge mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, foster mothers, aunties, carers, mother figures, and those who offer love, care, guidance and safety in quiet but meaningful ways.

We also recognise that Mother’s Day can feel different for everyone. For some, it is joyful. For others, it may be tender, complex or emotional.

For those grieving the loss of a mother, missing someone significant, navigating a difficult relationship, longing for motherhood, or finding today emotionally difficult, we acknowledge that today may bring many emotions.

However you experience today, we hope there is space for kindness, reflection and connection.

A special shout‑out to all the mums working at Synapse Psychology. We see you, we value you, and we appreciate everything you bring to our team and the families you support.

From all of us at Synapse Psychology, we acknowledge and celebrate the many forms of mothering, care and love.
