Connecting from home or from across the ocean 🤍

Sometimes, life’s circumstances, such as distance, health, or travel, mean not everyone can be with us physically at a celebration of life. Everyone should have the opportunity to pay their respects and say goodbye.

That’s why we offer professional livestreaming of our funeral services, with the family's permission, directly via the Finney’s website.

- Our high-quality streams allow family and friends from overseas or interstate to pay their respects in real-time, ensuring they feel part of this important family occasion.
- With the family’s permission, services are available to view live and remain accessible on our website for three months following the funeral.
- Simply visit our website and search by surname to find the service you wish to join.

At Finney Funeral Services, we use modern technology to ensure that even when we are apart, we can still grieve, remember, and celebrate a life together.

"Should young children attend funerals?"... It’s a question many parents ask themselves during a difficult time. While there are no set rules, and it is ultimately the parents or guardians' decision, we often find that children, when supported by their family, find comfort in being part of this important family occasion.

Rather than something to fear, a funeral can be a gentle way to help a child understand the rituals we use to say goodbye. It can also be a beautiful opportunity for them to contribute creatively:

🌸 A special flower: Letting them place a bloom on the coffin.
🎨 A final message: Writing a letter or drawing a picture to be included. Some of our coffin options are perfect for drawing on or decorating.
📖 A shared memory: Helping to choose a song or reading a short verse.

Ultimately, it is up to you. If you choose you would like your child to attend, we welcome their curiosity and innocence. We're here to support your family, no matter how small 🤍

"What clothes should I provide for my loved one?"... It’s a question many families ask, and while it might seem like a small detail, choosing the clothing for a loved one is often a deeply meaningful part of the farewell process.

There are no right or wrong answers, only what feels right. When making this decision, you might like to consider:

👗 Did they have a favourite outfit or colour to wear?
👔 What were they most comfortable in? Whether it was a formal suit, a favourite gardening shirt, or a cozy knitted jumper, we want them to look like them.
👞 Families often ask about shoes and under layers; you are welcome to bring these along to ensure they are fully dressed as they would be in life.

Our Funeral Directors are here to guide you through these choices with sensitivity and care 💜

Myth ✖ vs. Truth ✅: Is embalming always necessary?

One of the most common questions we receive is whether embalming is a requirement. At Finney Funeral Services, we believe in providing clear, professional guidance so you can make the right choice for your loved one.

The Facts:
In most cases, the answer is no. However, it may be required if:
✈️ Your loved one is being transferred overseas or interstate.
🏛️ They are being placed in an above-ground vault.
⏳ There will be a considerable delay before the funeral service.

Regardless of whether a viewing is chosen, our policy is to prepare every person with the highest level of dignity. When the circumstances warrant it, we provide complete embalming carried out by our own qualified staff.

As proud members of the Australian Institute of Embalming, we ensure that the highest standards of care and respect for your loved one are strictly maintained at all times.

FAQ: "What is the difference between a 'traditional' and a 'lawn' type grave?"

When choosing a final resting place for a loved one, you will often hear these two terms. While both offer a beautiful way to remember someone, the "look and feel" of the memorial is quite different.

Here is a quick guide to help you understand the options available in our local Tasmanian cemeteries:

🏛️ Traditional Graves:
These are characterised by their "full monumental work". They typically feature granite or stone kerbing that encloses the entire grave site. You often see these in older sections of cemeteries, offering a grand and timeless tribute.

🌱 Lawn Graves:
These are located within a beautifully manicured, open grassed area. These sites cannot be enclosed with kerbing; instead, the focus is on a headstone or a bronze plaque placed at the head of the grave. The result is a peaceful, park-like setting that feels open and natural.

Which is right for your family? The choice often comes down to personal preference or family tradition. At Finney Funeral Services, we’re here to help you navigate these choices and coordinate with local monumental masons to ensure your tribute is exactly as you envisioned.

A journey back to Brisbane Street, circa 1935 🕰️🏛️

We love this glimpse into our city's past. If you look closely at the dome of the Princess Theatre in the background, you can see the advertisement for the film "Go Into Your Dance"—dating this scene perfectly to late 1935.

For the Finney family, this photo captures a significant era of growth. In 1931, C.T. Finney & Sons moved to Brisbane Street, introducing motorised hearses and operating an extensive joinery factory at the rear of the building.

Next time you’re in the Launceston CBD, keep an eye out! Although we moved to our current locations some time ago, you can still spot the original Finney signage on the building today. It stands as a quiet reminder of our century-long journey with the people of this city.

While the trams no longer rattle down the street, our commitment to Tasmanian families remains exactly the same as it was when this photo was taken 💜
