The Winter edition of The Independent is here, and it's full of the moments that made the last few months so memorable.

Inside: Cracker Night lighting up the Newstead sky, the Big Freeze ice bucket challenge, and the Shining Stars celebrating our amazing staff, including Brett Martin's incredible 25 years of service.

We've also got updates from our Day Programs, supported accommodation homes, Lyne House and our In-Home Support team, a warm welcome to Brad Ellem as our new Director of Disability Services, and a look ahead to Christmas in July and our upcoming AGM.

❄️ Big Freeze 12 - done and dusted.

Last week, St Michael's got behind the Fight MND Big Freeze campaign in the best possible way. Mike, Kevin and Meg all took their seats outside the Merrington Centre and promptly received the ice bucket treatment from some very enthusiastic volunteers!

All three were outstanding sports about it. The reactions said it all.
Big Freeze is a national campaign raising awareness and funds for Motor Neurone Disease Australia, and we're proud to have played our small part in building its awareness again this year.

A huge thank you to our 'freezers' Mike, Kevin and Meg for taking the plunge, and to everyone who came out to cheer them on.

Who should we shower next year?!

Geoffrey and Julieanne have both been doing great work in their own units lately.

With support from their St Michael's team, both have been building confidence in the kitchen and keeping on top of the day-to-day routines that make a home run smoothly. Cooking, cleaning, and the small but satisfying rhythm of independent living - they're making the kind of progress worth sharing.

Michael has been a passionate supporter of the Scottsdale Football Club for over 50 years - and this season he's once again making the most of it.

With support from his team, Michael has been getting along to games regularly throughout the year, cheering on his club and catching up with familiar faces in the community he's been part of for decades. For Michael, match day is about more than the football, it's a chance to connect with people he knows and be part of something he genuinely loves.

Alongside the footy, Michael has also been putting in the work at the gym, attending regularly with his support workers and showing real commitment to his health and fitness. Good stuff!

Agfest is just around the corner, and we're heading on our annual Respite excursion. We've organised a day trip to Quercus Park in Carrick on Saturday 9 May, and we'd love you to join us.

It's a great day out, with hundreds of exhibitors, plenty to see and do, and the best of Tasmanian agriculture on show. We'll be travelling together by bus with full support across the day.

If you'd like to make a weekend of it, accommodation at Lyne House in Newstead may also be available - just ask when you get in touch.

Places are limited, so get in early. Contact the Respite team to register your interest:
