After consultation with our members, the South West Slopes Forestry Hub was relaunched as the Murray Region Forestry Hub (MRFH) to better reflect the extended geographical boundaries of the Hub region to include North East Victoria. The Murray Region Forestry Hub takes in about 3.5million hectares in the area east of the Hume Freeway, west of the Great Dividing Range, south of Gundagai, and taking in the plantations of NE Victoria down to Lake Eildon. Key forestry towns in the NSW part of the Hub are Tumut, Batlow, Tumbarumba, Gundagai and Adelong. In the Victorian Hub area, the main centres for the industry are Corryong, Tallangatta, Myrtleford and Wangaratta. This area contains around 170,000 ha of softwood plantations (both public and private). The Murray Region is home to one of the largest softwood-plantation forestry industries in Australia. Softwood is the wood from a pine tree, as distinct from hardwood that comes from gum trees or eucalypts (as found in native forests).

🔥 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲. Timber performs in a known and measurable way during fire, allowing its performance to be calculated, tested and designed for using established fire engineering principles and guidance.

🪵 Timber forms a 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲, 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. That predictable behaviour can mean 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗲 - potentially allowing safer evacuation for your family and better access for firefighters.

Next time someone says timber isn't safe in a fire, you can point to the fact that 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 - 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, using established fire engineering principles rather than assumption or perception. That's a powerful thing to be able to say to a builder, a specifier, or a homeowner who's hesitant about timber. For those manufacturers producing panelised wall frames or flooring cassettes, the 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗳𝗳-𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆, ensuring that engineered fire performance is delivered exactly as specified.

For termite risk management, appropriately preservative-treated timber and steel are both recognised as materials not subject to termite attack.
That means treated timber framing is a recognised solution for building in termite-prone areas, backed by established building requirements and proven products.

Week 3 Let’s Put Timber Back in the Conversation

Timber stores carbon ♻️

Every timber building starts storing carbon long before construction begins. As trees grow, they absorb carbon from the atmosphere and store it within their wood fibre.

When used in buildings, that carbon remains locked away for decades.

For Australia’s frame and truss manufacturing sector, this is an important part of the story. Every timber frame and truss manufactured for a new home represents

renewable timber being put to work in our built environment, with the carbon stored within that timber remaining locked away throughout the life of the building.

As Australia works to deliver more housing, our industry has an important opportunity to talk about not only how many homes we build, but what we build them from. Frame and truss manufacturers sit at the heart of that conversation – transforming timber into the structural systems that support Australian homes while contributing to a lower-carbon built environment.
