On the 2nd of June Calvary Lenah Valley celebrated an Official Blessing of all the Maternity Renovations by Archbishop Anthony Ireland.
This was after 12 months' work to renovate the maternity ward and fit out a fifth birthing suite.
A terrific facility team and contractors achieved this on-time and on budget and as the work was completed the true labours of mothers and babies continued without interruption.

This celebration stands in the long story of similar blessings. On the 15th of December 1940, Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital was Blessed and Opened by Archbishop Simonds. On the 15th of October 1944, the Maternity Ward was Blessed and Opened by Archbishop Tweedy after 12 months work to build the top floor.

Special guests on the day were members of Ministry Trustees: Mr David Robinson (Chair) accompanied by Ms Kerry Brettell, Mr Paul Davis, Ms Therese Tierney, Mr Bede Ritchie and Mrs Edwina MacArthur (Executive Officer) along with Damien Bruce the Calvary CEO and Sharon Kendell the Hospitals Chief Operating Officer and Regional COO Melissa Evans.

Of course staff members, midwives, mothers and babies were the most special guests as Archbishop Tony sprinkled all with the blessing of Holy Water as per our proud tradition.

The Calvary Community Council (CCC) is now accepting applications for its state-wide grant program supporting Tasmanian not-for-profit organisations.

These grants aim to improve the health and wellbeing of marginalised and vulnerable communities, with a focus on:
• Children and adolescents (0–18)
• Young adults (18–30)
• The elderly

Preference is given to projects addressing unmet or under-resourced health needs in the community.

Mary Potter Foundation – Supporting Those in Need 💙

At Calvary Health Care Tasmania, we’re proud to continue the legacy of compassion first inspired by Mary Potter and the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary.

The Mary Potter Foundation provides financial assistance to patients experiencing hardship, helping them access essential hospital care when they need it most.

Applications can be made by accredited Calvary medical practitioners for patients who may not have the capacity to cover treatment costs, with support available for full or partial hospital expenses.

This vital program is made possible through community generosity and our ongoing commitment to caring for those most in need.

Last week we celebrated Mary Potter Day, marking 140 years since the arrival of the Little Company of Mary Sisters in Australia.

To honour this remarkable legacy, Tony, Hannah, Kate and Sean delivered freshly baked scones to staff across the Calvary Hobart wards as part of our celebrations. The roving tea trolley was a heartfelt gesture of hospitality — a small way to thank our teams and reflect on Mary Potter’s enduring message of “Being for Others.”

At Calvary Hobart, we’re proud to have pioneered robotic surgery in Tasmania.

Since introducing the Da Vinci surgical system in 2019, our specialists have performed nearly 900 minimally-invasive surgeries in gynaecology and urology, including treatment for endometriosis, hysterectomies, prostatectomies and nephrectomies. Robotic surgery provides an advancement in techniques to perform more challenging procedures, along with greater clinical outcomes for patients.

In 2020, we expanded our program with the ROSA robotic platform, supporting precision in orthopaedic procedures such as knee replacements.

Our surgeons have seen first-hand how robotics enhances surgical precision, reduces recovery times, and delivers better outcomes for Tasmanian patients.
Robotic surgery at Calvary has become a highly successful program, delivering innovation, accuracy and compassionate care to our community.
