DANII Foundation - T1 diabetes

DANII Foundation - T1 diabetes Who's looking after today's T1D's? OUR VISION is for a world where people with T1D live without Fear

The DANII Foundation (supporting Type 1 Diabetes) was established in 2012 by parents Donna and Brian Meads-Barlow as a legacy to their 17 year old daughter Daniella following her sudden passing in 2011 as a result of a night time hypoglycaemic episode - a diabetes complication more widely known as “Dead in Bed” syndrome. Danii went to bed a happy, healthy teenager, but sometime during the night, h

er blood glucose levels (BGL’s) fell so low that she became unresponsive and was unable to alert her parents that something was terribly wrong. Danii’s BGL’s fell to such a critically low level that she experienced convulsions, pushing her into a coma, and causing her death – alone and in silence. On learning that there was technology overseas that could have prevented Danii’s death, her parents knew what they had to do: through their own tragedy, they had to do everything possible to prevent another life being cut short. Through her passing, Danii gave her parents a parting gift: the inspiration to create a lasting legacy in her name and the courage to offer today’s T1D’s the care and safety they need to help them manage their diabetes and in doing so, help them live a normal, long and enjoyable life. The DANII Foundation supports the research, development and introduction of alert technology to assist in the management of Type 1 Diabetes.

The countdown is on! 🏃‍♀️💙

In just 9 days , Therese and her family will be taking on Adelaide’s City-Bay Fun Run to raise funds for DANII Foundation and we’d love our community to get behind them.

With three of her children living with type 1 diabetes, Therese knows firsthand how deeply T1D can impact not only the person diagnosed, but the whole family. She also understands the difference that access to diabetes technology, including insulin pumps, can make in supporting day-to-day management and easing some of the constant burden that comes with T1D.

That’s why this fundraiser means so much to her. Therese wants to help give other children, parents and individuals living with T1D the opportunity to access the support and technology that can make a meaningful difference in their everyday lives. 💙

Her goal is $5,000, and she has already raised $714! 🎯

Every donation, big or small, brings Therese one step closer to that goal and helps DANII continue supporting people living with type 1 diabetes, including through our insulin pump scholarship program. 💙

If you’re able to donate, now is the perfect time to show Therese and her family that the DANII community is behind them. And if you can’t donate, sharing her fundraiser would make a difference too!

Living with type 1 diabetes can sometimes make people feel ,,different” - different routines, different challenges, different things to think about every single day. But different does not mean less. 💙

The devices you wear, the strength you carry, the resilience you build through difficult days, sleepless nights, highs, lows, and moments nobody else sees… they all tell a story of courage.

There may be days when you feel exhausted, frustrated, or simply tired of having to think about diabetes all the time. And that feeling is valid. But please remember this:
Things that make you feel different are often the things that show just how strong you truly are.

✨ Your journey, your scars, your devices, your perseverance, your ability to keep going even on the hard days that is something beautiful, powerful, and uniquely yours.✨

Never hide the parts of yourself that tell your story. 🤍

Could you recognise the signs of low blood sugar?

Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) can happen quickly and often without warning. For people living with Type 1 Diabetes, recognising the early signs is essential to prevent a mild hypo from becoming a medical emergency.

Common symptoms may include:
🔹 Shaking
🔹 Sweating
🔹 Dizziness
🔹 Hunger
🔹 Irritability
🔹 Difficulty concentrating
🔹 Confusion
🔹 Feeling tired or drowsy

A hypo occurs when blood glucose levels fall below 4.0 mmol/L (72 mg/dL). It should be treated promptly with 15g of fast-acting glucose, followed by a blood glucose check after 15 minutes. If levels remain low, repeat the treatment.

Everyone experiences hypoglycaemia differently, so learning to recognise your own symptoms and knowing how to respond can make all the difference.

💙 Awareness saves lives. Understanding creates safer communities.💙

If you or someone you know lives with Type 1 Diabetes, share this post to help others recognise the signs of hypoglycaemia.

Connecting with Industry Leaders at the Australasian Diabetes Congress 2026

Jo and Patrick had the pleasure of attending the Australasian Diabetes Congress, bringing together leading professionals, researchers, educators and organisations from across Australia and around the world.

The conference provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with industry leaders, exchange ideas and gain valuable insights into the latest developments in diabetes research, clinical care, education and community priorities.

For Jo and Patrick, it was a valuable experience to meet with key people across the industry, strengthen professional relationships and stay up to date with the innovations and developments shaping the future of diabetes care.

It was a great few days of learning, networking and sharing ideas, and they look forward to bringing these new insights and connections back into their work!✨

💙 Update from Brody- DANII Foundation Insulin Pump Scholarship Recipient💙

For Brody and his family, receiving an Omnipod 5 has meant much more than a new way of managing Type 1 Diabetes. It has brought greater confidence, flexibility and freedom into everyday life.

Since receiving his pump with the support of the DANII Foundation, Brody’s diabetes management has become easier and more consistent. Working alongside his Dexcom G7, the Omnipod 5 has helped provide better blood glucose management day and night, while making insulin doses and corrections easier without constantly interrupting what Brody is doing.

The biggest difference can be seen in the moments where diabetes can now sit a little more quietly in the background. 💫

Recently, Brody has enjoyed a family trip to Phillip Island, seeing the Little Penguins, racing around the Go-Kart track, experiencing Gold Class for the first time to see *Moana*, and participating in his Junior School Strings ensemble.

Even Book Week at school felt different. His family shared that Brody was much more excited to dress up and participate this year, with greater confidence and less self-consciousness around his diabetes.

As his family shared:

“The ease with which we can now administer his doses or perform corrections, and the flexibility to attend to his needs without disrupting what he is involved in, is truly a blessing, allowing him to place his focus more fully on just being a kid.” 💙

For Brody, access to diabetes technology means greater independence and confidence. For his family, greater peace of mind. And together, more space for school, music, adventures and simply enjoying childhood.

Stories like Brody’s remind us why access to diabetes technology matters.

One of the biggest misconceptions about living with type 1 diabetes is the idea that people always have to ,,stay positive.” 💙

Yes, positivity can help. Strength can help. Hope can help.
But living with T1D every single day can also feel exhausting, frustrating, unfair, and emotionally draining sometimes and it’s okay to admit that.

You can be grateful and still struggle.
You can be strong and still cry.
You can manage your diabetes well and still feel tired of it sometimes.

Having difficult days does not make you negative, weak, or ungrateful. It makes you human.

There is so much happening behind the scenes that people often don’t see: the constant thinking, the interrupted sleep, the mental exhaustion, the fear of highs and lows, and the pressure of never truly getting a “day off.”

✨You do not have to hide your emotions to prove your strength.✨

And if today feels heavy, please remember that asking for support is also a sign of strength. 🤍

🩵 DANII Foundation Insulin Pump Scholarship Recipient - Barbara 🩵

Sometimes, life brings challenges we never expect.

At 65 years old, while undergoing cancer treatment, Barbara was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Learning how to manage injections, count carbohydrates and calculate insulin doses while constantly going in and out of hospital felt overwhelming.

But then came the Omnipod.

As Barbara describes it, receiving the pump changed her life almost immediately. What once felt frightening and overwhelming became something she could manage with confidence. The Omnipod took away the fear of diabetes, gave her greater control over her blood glucose levels, and helped her feel like herself again.

Today, Barbara spends more than 80% of her time in range, sleeps with greater peace of mind, and has even written her own low-carbohydrate cookbook, adapting her favourite recipes so she could continue enjoying the foods she loves while managing Type 1 Diabetes.

In Barbara's own words:

"The Omnipod has been the best thing I've ever had in my arsenal. It took the fear away and gave me my mind and body back. I'm in charge, I make my choices, and I own my life again."

Stories like Barbara's remind us why the DANII Foundation Insulin Pump Scholarship Program matters. Access to life-changing technology can help people regain confidence, independence and control over their lives.

💙 You can help change another life.
