Meet Enid, 101 years young... yes, you read correctly! Enid has been undergoing physio treatment on our rehabilitation ward for a fractured arm and doesn't look a day over 70. What a lady! Pretty much completely independent too. Born and raised in Kyogle, these days Enid whips around Lennox Head on her mobility scooter and still gets over to the bowlo, where she is a life member.
Born in 1925, Enid was part of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) during the war, providing nursing care at age 17 to service men and women before she went on to become a Registered Nurse after 4 years of 'brutal' training in Sydney.
'Most of the old sisters and people in charge... were old warhorses and really strict...It was four years hard slog... the agony and ecstasy of nursing' she said, 'but I'd do it all again'. Enid then travelled to Melbourne for midwife training before working in various regional hospitals and eventually returning to Ballina Hospital, where she met her future husband, and made her way to deputy Head Matron. Enid retired at age 76.
Of her care here at St Vincent's Lismore, Enid says 'I can't speak highly enough of St Vincent's ... all the staff, from the senior doctors to the nurses to the [housekeeping] staff, everybody's been really nice and looked after me'.
On independent living in Lennox, she says 'I have absolutely wonderful neighbours and friends down there. If the neighbours are making a baked dinner or casserole...they always make an extra serve for me. It's so cool'.
Enid has a bit on, and needs to get the invitations ready for her 102nd birthday bash. Wishing you a speedy recovery Enid, see you at the Lennox bowlo for some trivia ๐
