Women's Health Northern Rivers

Women's Health Northern Rivers Our services recognise and challenge the effects of sex-role stereotyping and gender discrimination on women’s health and wellbeing.

We work to empower women to determine their individual health needs and to make and access evidence informed choices. WHNR offers drop in support, women’s health clinic, counselling and health and wellness activities in a safe, confidential space.

During this Women's Health Week we are grateful that Minister for Women, the Hon. Jodie Harrison MP, continues to recognise the importance of sustained investment in women's health services across the state. The increase in core funding for NSW's women's health centres represented a significant milestone after decades of limited growth, strengthening our ability to support the health, wellbeing and safety of women across our communities.

We are one of 21 women's health centres across NSW, supported by our peak body, Women's Health NSW. This Women's Health Week, we're joining the call for ongoing, secure and sustainable funding for women's health centres. Help us advocate for the health and wellbeing of women across NSW by writing to your local MP and letting them know why these essential services matter.

The NSW Government’s investment allowed women’s health centres to add additional services to better respond to the growing complexity of women’s health needs. This allowed Women's Health Northern Rivers, and centres across NSW to develop multidisciplinary teams and integrated service models. This Women’s Health Week we encourage you to take the small step of writing to your local member to tell them women’s health centres need ongoing, secure funding at a sustainable level.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of a young person, reportedly connected to an alleged incident involving strangulation during sexual activity.

Women's Health Northern Rivers has been training service providers locally on Identifying & Responding to Non-Fatal Strangulation & Sexual Choking in Health & Youth Settings and Responding to Non-Fatal Strangulation & Possible Brain Injury in DFV and Sexual Assault Work. We have resources to share that support service providers like GPs, educators and other allied health professionals to have conversations with young people about sexual choking. WHNR can also offer in-service training to teams on non-fatal strangulation, sexual choking and acquired brain injury . Please reach out if you'd like to learn more or engage us for some training.

Police are continuing to investigate the death of a 16-year-old Sydney girl, which the ABC understands is being treated as a suspected sexual choking act.

🚨 NEW RESOURCE 🚨 Domestic and Family Violence Reference Sheet

Recognising and responding to domestic and family violence in an emergency evacuation centre can be complex. Staff and volunteers may encounter situations where people are experiencing violence but are unable or unwilling to disclose it.

Our new Domestic and Family Violence Reference Sheet provides practical guidance on:

✔️ Recognising indicators of DFV
✔️ Using trauma-informed communication
✔️ Creating safe and private spaces
✔️ Protecting confidentiality and safety
✔️ Supporting referrals to specialist services
✔️ Responding appropriately across diverse communities

This resource is designed as a practical reference tool for Emergency Evacuation Centre staff and volunteers. It’s based on findings from our Creating Safe and Inclusive Emergency Evacuation Centres report, which draws on consultations with community organisations, advocates and subject matter experts to identify practical, evidence-informed recommendations for more inclusive emergency evacuation centres.

Read and download the Reference Sheet here: https://genderanddisaster.com.au/creating-safe-shelter-spaces/
