One of the more subtle changes women describe during perimenopause is having less tolerance for things they previously managed quite well.

Noise feels more intrusive.

A busy day feels more demanding.

Interruptions are harder to brush off.

A poor night's sleep has a bigger impact.

Sometimes this gets interpreted as becoming less patient or less capable.

But our tolerance isn't separate from our physiology.

Sleep, hormonal change, stress and the amount we're already carrying can all influence how much capacity we have available on any given day.

The circumstances may look much the same.

Our capacity to respond to them may not be.

The symptom that brings someone into a consultation isn't always where the story begins.

Sleep might be the biggest concern.

But when we look back, perhaps stress tolerance changed first. Or energy. Or the menstrual cycle. Or digestion.

None of these automatically explains the others.

But the timing, relationships and patterns between symptoms can provide useful information.

This is one of the reasons I don't like looking at menopause symptoms in isolation.

Start with what is bothering you.

Then widen the lens.

One of the things I hear most often in clinic isn't a symptom.

It's a question.

"Is it just me?"

Women ask it about brain fog.

About anxiety.

About feeling less patient.

About suddenly needing more rest than they used to.

They ask it quietly, almost as though they're expecting the answer to be yes.

It rarely is.

One of the most reassuring parts of this work is watching that question disappear as women begin to realise they aren't alone in what they're experiencing.

One of the questions I'm asked quite often is,

*"What's the first thing you look for?"*

The answer usually surprises people.

I don't begin by trying to match one symptom with one solution.

I begin by looking for patterns.

How symptoms relate to one another.

When they appear.

What changed before they started.

How sleep, stress, energy and recovery fit into the picture.

It's often those patterns that provide the clearest direction for support.

We often talk about menopause as a hormonal transition.

But for many women, it becomes something much broader.

A time of reassessing priorities.

Questioning long-held expectations.

Noticing where energy has been spent without being replenished.

For some, it is the first time they've stopped long enough to ask,

"Is this still the way I want to live?"

That can feel uncomfortable.

It can also become the beginning of a very different relationship with yourself.

Many women have spent decades becoming exceptionally good at pushing through.

Meeting deadlines.

Looking after everyone else.

Continuing despite poor sleep, stress, or exhaustion.

That resilience can be incredibly valuable.

But there comes a point where continuing to push through may no longer be helping.

Sometimes the strongest decision isn't pushing harder.

It's recognising when your body is asking for something different.

One of the hardest comparisons we make is with our younger selves.

The person who could manage on less sleep.

Who recovered more quickly.

Who seemed to have more energy available.

It's an understandable comparison, but it's often an unhelpful one.

Our bodies change throughout life.

The way we care for them needs to change too.

Supporting your health isn't about trying to become the person you were ten or twenty years ago.

It's about understanding what your body needs now.

One of the quieter transitions of midlife is learning that the expectations we've carried for years may no longer fit.

The expectation that we should always cope.

That we should recover quickly.

That we should be able to keep saying yes to everything.

That asking more of ourselves is the answer.

Sometimes the greatest source of frustration isn't the body itself.

It's the gap between what we expect of ourselves and what our body is asking for.

Changing those expectations isn't giving up.

It's recognising that different stages of life often require a different way of caring for ourselves.

One of the biggest changes I see in menopause isn't always physical.

It's the way women begin to question themselves.

"Why can't I cope like I used to?"

"Why am I so tired?"

"Why does everything feel harder?"

Over time, those questions can quietly become self-criticism.

I think they're often the wrong questions.

A more helpful place to begin is simply asking:

"What has my body been carrying?"

One of the hardest parts of menopause isn't always the symptoms themselves.

Sometimes it's the expectation that our body should still respond the way it always has.

The same pace.
The same recovery.
The same capacity.

When those expectations no longer match reality, it's easy to feel frustrated with ourselves.

But menopause is a transition, not a test of how well we can keep doing everything the way we've always done it.

Sometimes the first step isn't changing the body.

It's changing the way we understand it.
