🫐 Herbal Highlights | Winter Herb Series - Part 1: Elderberry

If there is one herb I recommend to almost everyone heading into winter, it is elderberry. And for those that know me, will know that I keep a bottle of elderberry tincture in my bag, on my desk, in the car… I’m always taking squirts thru the winter!

Sambucus nigra- the elder tree- has a long and well-documented history in European herbal medicine, and a growing body of clinical research now supports what traditional herbalists have known for centuries: elderberry is one of our most effective natural allies for immune support through the cooler months.

What the research tells us:
Clinical trials have shown that elderberry extract can reduce the duration of influenza by an average of four days compared to placebo- particularly powerful when taken at the very first sign of illness. It is also well-supported for reducing the severity of cold and flu symptoms and supporting ongoing immune resilience through winter.

How to use it at home:
One of elderberry's great strengths is how well it lends itself to simple home preparations. A jar of elderberry syrup in the fridge is one of the easiest and most effective acts of winter self-care you can offer yourself and your family.

Over in the Herbal Highlights section of our Wellness Hub, I've just published Part 1 of our Winter Herb Series- a full guide to elderberry, including:

🫐 A classic elderberry syrup recipe
🍵 An elderberry winter immune tea blend
🌸 An elderflower steam inhalation for congestion
🍯 Elderberry infused honey

Plus the clinical evidence, safety considerations, and guidance on when to seek professional support.

🌿 Introducing the Winter Herbal Allies Series 🌿

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, many of us naturally begin reaching for the herbs that have supported people through winter for generations.

Over the coming weeks, I'll be sharing a series of posts and in-depth website articles exploring some of my favourite winter herbal allies- plants traditionally used to support immunity, respiratory health, digestion, energy, resilience, and emotional wellbeing during the colder months.

Together we'll journey through:

🌿 Elderberry – the beloved winter immune ally
🌿 Echinacea – support during times of acute illness
🌿 Ginger – warmth, circulation and digestive comfort
🌿 Thyme – a traditional herb for respiratory health
🌿 Astragalus – deep immune nourishment and vitality
🌿 Marshmallow Root – soothing support for dry, irritated tissues
🌿 Tulsi (Holy Basil) – calm resilience during stressful times
🌿 St John's Wort – a herb traditionally used to support mood and the nervous system

Each week I'll share a little about the herb, its traditional uses, how it has been used throughout herbal history, and practical ways it may be incorporated into a wellness routine. For those who would like to explore further, a companion article will also be available on the website with a deeper look at each herb and its place in traditional herbal medicine.

Whether you're new to herbal medicine or have a cupboard full of teas and tinctures, I hope this series helps you connect more deeply with the plants that so often walk beside us through the winter season.

There is something comforting about winter herbs. They offer warmth, nourishment, and gentle support at a time of year when many of us need it most.

🌕 Blue Moon in Sagittarius- May 31st, 2026 🌕

Earlier this month we were asked to release and transform.

Rising tonight, this Blue Moon asks a different question:

✨ What wisdom will you carry forward? ✨

As autumn draws to a close here in the Southern Hemisphere, the Full Moon rises once again.

This month's Full Moon is known as a Blue Moon- not because it appears blue, but because it is the second Full Moon occurring within the same calendar month. A Blue Moon occurs only every two to three years.

It is from this relative rarity that we get the saying:

✨ "Once in a blue moon." ✨

A phrase used to describe something special or uncommon.

This particular Blue Moon is also a Micromoon, meaning it occurs when the Moon is near its furthest point from Earth. While it may appear slightly smaller than an average Full Moon, its energy and symbolism remain just as powerful.

Falling in the sign of Sagittarius, this Full Moon carries an energy of expansion, wisdom, truth, and vision.

After the deep emotional waters of the Scorpio Full Moon and the reflective energy of Samhain earlier this month, Sagittarius gently encourages us to lift our eyes toward the horizon and reconnect with possibility.

✨ What have I learned?
✨ Where am I being called to grow?
✨ What adventure is waiting beyond my comfort zone?

You may notice:
• A desire for freedom or change
• A pull towards learning, study, or spiritual growth
• Restlessness around situations that no longer align
• Renewed optimism about the future
• A longing to reconnect with purpose and meaning

🌿 Herbal Allies for this Moon:
• Rosemary– clarity and focus
• Lemon Balm– easing mental overwhelm
• Holy Basil (Tulsi)– resilience and balance
• Rose– opening the heart to possibility

🍵 Simple Blue Moon Ritual

Take a warm cup of tea outside beneath the moonlight.

Reflect on the lessons of the season now ending.

Write down:

What wisdom am I carrying forward?

What dream am I ready to pursue?

What truth do I need to trust?

Offer gratitude for how far you have come, even if the path ahead is not yet fully visible.

The moon reminds us that every cycle unfolds in its own time.

🌕 Full Moon in Scorpio & Samhain - May 1st, 2026

The Full Moon rises on May 1st, in the sign of Scorpio, just as we step into Samhain here in the Southern Hemisphere. How lucky are we!

Traditionally called the Flower Moon in the Northern Hemisphere, this moon feels very different for us- sitting in the deep, quiet energy heading into late autumn.

Here, in the Southern Hemisphere, it is often referred to as :
✨The Darkening Moon
✨ The Frost Moon or
✨ The Ancestor Moon

And this year… it carries the intensity of Scorpio.

♏ Scorpio Full Moon Energy
This is not a light, surface-level moon.

Scorpio invites us into the depths - into truth, transformation, and release.

You may feel:
• Emotions rising more strongly than usual
• Old patterns or memories surfacing
• A need to let go of something you’ve been holding onto
• A deep desire for honesty - with yourself and others

This is powerful clearing energy.

✨ And paired with Samhain…

Samhain, often known as the Witches’ New Year, is a sacred threshold - a time to honour what has passed and step quietly into a new cycle.

The veil is said to be thin… making this a potent time for remembrance and connection.

🕯 Traditional Samhain practices:
• Setting a place at the table for loved ones who have passed
• Lighting candles in remembrance
• Creating a small ancestral altar
• Sitting in quiet reflection or sharing stories around a fire

🌿 Herbal Allies:
• Mugwort - intuition and inner vision
• Rosemary - remembrance and protection
• Chamomile - soften emotional edges
• Lavender - calm and ground

🍵 Simple Ritual:
On the evening of May 1st:

Sit under the moon with a warm tea.
Light a candle.

Ask yourself:
What am I ready to release?
What do I honour and carry forward?

Let the rest fall away.

Celebrating Auslan Day 🤟🌿

Today I’m honouring **Auslan Day**, a day that recognises the rich language, culture, and community of Deaf Australians.

For me, learning and using Auslan has been more than just learning a language - it’s been about connection. It’s about creating a space where communication feels safe, natural, and respectful.

In healthcare, communication is everything.
When we can truly understand one another, we can offer better care, deeper support, and more meaningful outcomes.

Being able to sign means that members of the Deaf community are welcomed into my clinic without barriers - no guesswork, no frustration, just open, clear communication.

**Everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and understood.**

Auslan is a beautiful reminder that inclusivity isn’t just a concept - it’s something we actively create through the choices we make in our work and our lives.

If you are part of the Deaf community, or support someone who is, please know that my clinic is a space where you are warmly welcomed 🤍

🍂 Mabon - The Autumn Equinox (Southern Hemisphere) 🍂

Around March 20-23, we arrive at Mabon, the Autumn Equinox - a moment where day and night stand in perfect balance.

From here, the light begins to gently wane, and we are invited to turn inward… to slow down, reflect, and honour what has been.

Mabon is often called the Second Harvest - a time to gather the final fruits of our efforts, both physically and emotionally. It’s not just about what we’ve grown… but what we’ve learned.

✨ Why we celebrate Mabon:
• To give thanks for the season that has passed
• To reflect on what has worked - and what hasn’t
• To gently release what we no longer need as we move into the cooler months
• To restore balance within ourselves

🍵 Herbal allies for Mabon:
• Nettle: deeply nourishing and grounding as we move into autumn
• Chamomile: softens the nervous system and eases emotional tension
• Lemon Balm: lifts the spirit while calming overwhelm
• Rosehip: rich in vitamin C, supporting immune resilience
• Dandelion root: supports liver and digestive function as we transition seasons

This is a beautiful time to begin warming teas, gentle detox support, and nourishing rituals.

🌿 A simple ritual:
Make a warm herbal tea at sunset, sit quietly, and reflect on:
What am I ready to let go of? What am I grateful for?

As the leaves begin to fall, we are reminded…
We are allowed to release, too.
