Children learn to talk by listening, watching, and practicing every day. Every child is unique, but here’s a simple guide to what’s typical:
👶 12 months – Responds to name, waves/points, says 1–2 words, copies sounds
👧 18 months – 6–20 words, understands up to 50, follows short instructions, pretend play
🧒 2 years – 50+ words, combines 2 words (“more juice”), asks simple questions, follows 2-step instructions
👦 3 years – 200–500 words, short sentences (2–3 words), starts asking “who/what/where,” understood most of the time
👩 4 years – Tells little stories, uses linking words (and, because), talks about past events, mostly understood by everyone
🧑🏫 5 years – Retells stories with detail, clear sentences, follows classroom-style instructions, ready for literacy skills
💡 Tip: Milestones are guides, not deadlines. Some kids talk early, others later. But if you’re worried, it’s always better to check — early support can make a big difference.
