Beginner eye term vs advanced eye term — clinic edition 👀

Red eye → bacterial conjunctivitis
Tired eyes → dry eye disease
Sty → chalazion
Ageing eye → arcus senilis
Cloudy lens → cataract

Turns out everything you've been calling "my eye's being weird" has a proper name. 😅

Try this at home tonight. 👁️

Because we're binocular — using both eyes at once — your brain quietly covers for the weaker eye. You can lose a surprising amount of vision on one side and genuinely not notice.

Dr John's advice is simple: every so often, cover one eye at a time and look at the TV, a book, or the label on your drink. Then swap.

Early changes from cataracts, early macular degeneration and even fairly advanced glaucoma can hide this way. Picking something up early usually means better options for treating it. 📋

It takes ten seconds. Go on 👋

(A quick self-check like this doesn't replace a proper eye test — if something looks different, book in and get it checked.)

"Ortho" means straight. "Optics" means eyes. So our main job is keeping eyes straight. 👁️

Meet Samaha, one of the orthoptists at PersonalEYES. Orthoptists handle the non-surgical side of eye turns — lazy eye, eye-strain headaches from close-up work, and the eye exercises that go with them.

In a private practice like ours there's a second half to the job: orthoptists are the ones who screen you before you ever sit down with the doctor. All those scans and tests at the start of your appointment? That's them. 📋

So if you've been to PersonalEYES, you've almost certainly met one. 💙

👓 Over 50 and Tired of Juggling Glasses? There May Be Another Option! 👀
Reading glasses for your phone. Distance glasses for driving. Another pair for the computer… Sound familiar? 😩

As we get older, our eyes naturally lose the ability to focus up close. But what if you could reduce your dependence on glasses?

✨ Introducing Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) ✨
RLE is a vision correction procedure that replaces your eye's natural lens with an advanced artificial lens, potentially improving your vision at multiple distances.

✅ Reduce your reliance on reading and distance glasses
✅ Enjoy greater visual freedom for work, travel and everyday life
✅ Correct certain age-related focusing problems
✅ No need for cataract surgery later, as your natural lens has already been replaced

Unlike LASIK, RLE can be particularly suitable for people in their 50s and 60s who want a longer-term vision correction option. Book a consultation with the experienced team at personalEYES.

Meet Dr John Yek 👋

Glaucoma and cataract specialist, part of the PersonalEYES team for two and a half years — and a consultant ophthalmologist for over a decade before that. Medical school at the University of Melbourne, then ophthalmology training here in New South Wales. 🎓

Why eyes? In his words: "the gift of sight is something we all take for granted until we lose it."

He's seen what advanced cataracts can do — people losing their confidence and their independence, bumping into things. And he's been there for the moment after surgery when the patch comes off and they can see again. 💙

That's the part he calls the most rewarding thing about the job.

Welcome to the feed, Dr John 👁️

It's always special when a patient takes the time to show their appreciation!

One of our lovely patients surprised A/Prof Chandra Bala with a thoughtful gift to thank him for the care and treatment she received.

And what better way to say thank you than with some tea? After all, great eye care deserves a great cup of tea! 😂☕

Moments like these remind us why we do what we do. Making a positive difference in our patients' lives is the greatest reward.

🚀👁️ ASIA-PACIFIC FIRST! A NEW ERA IN EYE SURGERY!

We're excited to share another milestone for personalEYES!
Dr John Yek and personalEYES are the first in the Asia-Pacific region to use the new Alcon UNITY™ M surgical microscope! 🎉

So, what does this mean for patients?
Imagine being able to see the tiniest details with incredible clarity while performing delicate eye surgery.

This advanced technology gives our surgeons:

🔬 A clearer, brighter view – helping them see important details inside the eye.
👁️ Greater precision – allowing surgeons to work with enhanced visibility during delicate procedures.
✨ Improved focus – making it easier to see structures at different depths within the eye.

At personalEYES, we believe great patient care starts with great people, supported by the latest technology.
'
A huge congratulations to Dr John Yek and the team for bringing this exciting innovation to our patients! 💙

👁️ Your Eyes Are Always Moving

Did you know your eyes make thousands of tiny movements every day?
Even when you think you’re staring at something completely still, your eyes are constantly making tiny adjustments that help maintain a clear, detailed view of the world.

Reading. Driving. Recognising a face. Watching your children play. Your eyes are working behind the scenes for almost every waking moment.
Pretty incredible for something we often take for granted. 💙
