Transitions don’t have to become a daily battle.

For many children, transitions can feel overwhelming because it means stopping something enjoyable and moving to something less preferred. That can be really challenging for developing brains.

Simple supports can make a big difference by creating:
Predictability
A sense of control
Smoother transitions

Try these strategies at home:
Give a warning
“2 more minutes, then pack up.”
Give a job
“You’re in charge of packing up the cars.”
Prepare mentally

Help shift attention gradually so your child feels less rushed and more ready for what comes next.
These small changes can help children:
Feel more in control
Understand what’s expected
Stay focused during transitions
Reduce stress and frustration

Supporting transitions is a skill that develops over time, and with the right support, children can build confidence and flexibility in everyday routines.

🖤💛❤️ALL IN for Reconciliation❤️💛🖤

This National Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge the histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and reflect on how we can all take meaningful action toward reconciliation.

At Connecting Dots for Kids, being “ALL IN” means:
✨️Listening and learning
✨️Creating culturally safe and inclusive spaces
✨️Valuing connection, storytelling and community
✨️Continuing to grow in understanding and respect

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June and includes two significant dates:
▪︎27 May, anniversary of the 1967 Referendum
▪︎3 June, Mabo Day

This year’s theme reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility, and that real change happens when we all take part.

Communication doesn’t happen in isolation

Before words can come, children need to feel safe, regulated, and connected.
That’s why Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy work so closely together. Supporting the body, attention, and regulation creates the foundation for communication to develop.

When we support the whole child, not just the words, that’s when we start to see real progress

So much of what we see as “behaviour” is actually communication.

When a child is having a hard time, it’s often because something feels hard, overwhelming, or uncomfortable in their world, not because they’re choosing to make things difficult.

When we start to look a little deeper and get curious about what might be going on underneath, our response can shift from reacting… to supporting.

That shift is where the real difference happens
